Iโ€™m excited to find new-to-me trans and nonbinary authors.

I had to explain to managers at work that I will probably be unable to attend GenCon for the next several years, between the TSA crackdowns and the federal prohibition against transgender bathroom access (affecting airports).

The flags. It's the American flags hanging everywhere, you know thatโ€™s not normal right?

Youโ€™re not going to sleep wondering which country it is in which youโ€™re living. You went to bed in Texas, you're waking up in Texas - unless youโ€™re brown and ICE has targeted you and your family in which case who knows where the black site theyโ€™re going to keep you in where they separate you from your kids before deportation is located

But like I donโ€™t drive down an average suburban street in Australia to see hundreds of houses with Australian flags hanging out the front, and then half of those homes having a super racist version of the Australian flag that celebrates a time we owned human beings from another country and made them do all of the work for us for free while we took all the profits then called them lazy and pretended we didnโ€™t do it but wish we could do it again

Those American flags may be made in China but the racism is homegrown

The Drowning House by Cherie Priest (@cheriepriest.com)
is a haunted house tale. I appreciated the rounded, imperfect female leader. Priest made a relatable character & a friendship bond btwn a woman & a man by making them flawed & whole.

Open @joekatz45.bsky.socialโ€™s post to find email addresses and phone numbers for these compliant, racist Democrats who voted in favor of the Republicanโ€™s censure of Representative Al Green.

Friends tried to warn me about how much I was working for a particular company. A 60-hour week was standard, and I often clocked 80 - 100 hour weeks during crunch time.

I wasnโ€™t able to hear them. I had to leave tech in 2019 because I was overwhelmed. Iโ€™m still not able to work without panicking.

What Iโ€™m doing: Iโ€™m reading authors whom I havenโ€™t read much or at all before because algorithms donโ€™t suggest them to me. I had a typical white girl public education that emphasized white men.

I did this a few years ago to great effect.

Kai Ashanti Wilsonโ€™s short story, The Devil in America, is one Iโ€™ll read again. I loved Easterโ€™s โ€œangels.โ€ The depth of loss that even recently-gained freedom canโ€™t replace can never be measured.

Our country elected children in their โ€œterrible-twos.โ€ These particular children have the power to threaten Ukraine with World War III while demanding that Zelenskyy say thank you (previous thank yous donโ€™t count) and kiss the ring of Putin on Trumpโ€™s hand.

A quote from Baldwinโ€™s Nothing Personal that sums up much of the essay:

โ€œTo be locked in the past means, in effect, that no one has a past, since one can never assess it, or use it: and if one cannot use the past, one cannot function in the present, and so one can never be free.

James Baldwinโ€™s essay, Nothing Personal, is achingly relevant to the reality we experience today. Weโ€™re locked in our past, which we have altered from its reality.

Shigidi and the Brass Head of Obalufon by Wolfe Talabi (@wtalabi.bsky.social) has Yoruban deities formed into corporations while exploring the effects of colonialism and stolen artifacts. I loved the setting and am now learning more about the deities.

Thanks very much, @imaniperry.bsky.social, for such a touching and thoughtful book. I heard your recent NPR interview and plan to add Black in Blues: How a Color Tells the Story of My People to my year of #2025withoutstraightwhitecisgenderedmaleauthors.

4/4 She ends in Cuba. A refugee talks abt when she & a friend went clubbing. The taxi refused to take them home. The friend insisted. The driver produced a machete. โ€œHer friend was unfazed. โ€˜Motherfucker, I said take us home.โ€™โ€

I love this book

3/4 โ€œHad these graves not been seen, daily, over generations had we not been witnesses to them, I do not know how it would have been possible to sustain hope, or at least, to pretend to.โ€

Perry doesnโ€™t ask why Black people didnโ€™t leave the South. More compellingly, she asks: why Black people stayed

2/4 She writes like a storyteller, giving her reflections the immediacy of life. Here are a pair of quotes that made me really focus my attention:

โ€œWhy did Black folks stay (in the South)? The answer is home. If everyone had departed, no one would have been left to tend the ancestorsโ€™ graves.โ€
