I picked up an Alternative Tentacles comp, Cheech and Chong's 'Los Cuchinos,' the best of Sam and Dave, and Albany Berg's 'Wozzeck.' After that, I was hooked on the hunt. Got a series of better setups over the next decade or so, but it all started with a total piece of shit.

My first turntable was a colossal piece of shit with an integrated AM/FM radio and a half-dead 8-track player that I got from the thrift shop. If I didn't have it, I never would have even looked in the bins of cheap records.

Some people get really bent out of shape when folks buy cheap, shitty turntables like Crosleys or whatever other suitcase brands are out there now. I say, "Go for it." Whatever gets you a foot into the hobby is fine with me.

Could be bad pressings or static. Unlikely that a new record has embedded garbage in the grooves.
