22.01.2026 11:40 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Lost Science is examining the state of US science one year into Trumpβs second term. In collaboration with @maxkozlov.bsky.social ov.bsky.social, @jeff-tollefson.bsky.social, @dangaristo.bsky.social, Kelly Krause, Richard Monastersky, @creditdesign.bsky.social & Wesley Fernandes.
22.01.2026 10:44 β π 3 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0The resulting image sits in an uneasy space between data representation and physical simulation.
It is intentionally unstableβan attempt to make visible not only what has been lost, but the limits of our visual languages when faced with destruction.
Rather than using conventional charts, I translated the cancelled grants into a glass-like surface, structured by U.S. states and grant size.
That structure was then computationally fractured and exploded.
The project is not only about scale, but about method. Data visualization is optimized to show presence, comparison, and structure. It is far less equipped to represent disappearance, rupture, and loss.
What does a visualization look like when what it describes no longer exists?
Nature Cover Lost Science by Kim Albrecht
In collaboration with Nature, I investigated the impact of the Trump administration on US science one year after its return to office. More than 7800 research grants were cancelled or frozen, affecting ~25000 scientists and research staff and resulting in an ~US$32 billion in lost research funding.

09.11.2025 14:30 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Wonderful! Looking forward to seeing you. Sadly I will only arrive Wednesday night. I hope you're still there.
10.07.2025 09:51 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Maybe. Alternatively we can also allow for human-machine coalitions, the Centaurus (chess) path.
03.07.2025 17:06 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Super interesting! It took me a second, but then you can see clear patterns across parties. As you don't need the current color encoding, you could add even more years. I haven't seen many radar charts that I like, but this one makes sense as the dimensions relate to one another.

11.03.2025 09:59 β π 6 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0Iβm thrilled to bring together two institutions that shaped my work: BarabΓ‘siLab & metaLAB (at) Harvard.
On June 11β12, 2025, weβre hosting Data | Artβa conference on how data entangles with artistic, scientific & curatorial practices.
We have a stellar lineup of speakers! More soon: data-art.info
I read both (@shirleywu.studio) of your posts and this has been on my mind for a while. I've been working on a presentation about it in contrast/comparison to other media, especially photography. In short, I see a field that is growing conceptually and theoretically, leading towards new directions.
07.03.2025 16:40 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 2 π 0Join us for βThe Self as a Data Traceβ, a workshop with @kimay.bsky.social on March 8
Can art reclaim the story of our digital selves?
This is the first of 3 workshops leading up to an exhibition, ATTENTION IS ALL I NEED, Iβm curating with OnCurating x HEK Basel.
π I know the feeling! Been there, done that. Please never check my code for setTimeout(), but I am glad to hear that I am not alone.
12.02.2025 18:25 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0Iβll be speaking at two events tonight at the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences about data metamorphosis. Looking forward to some engaging discussions and seeing familiar faces.

A photograph by the NYTimes of the chart Donald J. Trump was pointing at when shots rang out on Saturday at his rally in Butler, Pa.
Diagram from the FDP paper on the planned course of the coalition break in November 2024.
For me, 2024 added another dimension to understanding the power of mapping. While Donald Trump credits a chart for "saving his life," in Germany, the FDP's collapse is framed by a self-made pyramid diagram.

29.11.2024 09:13 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0I just scrolled through this and it is wonderfully made. The build-up is very thoughtful. It is not easy to go from something known, parties over time, to something new, years in government and change in survey value, with transitions, and without breaks. Superb!
