The big man Ridley Scott at BFI Southbank. Very funny, very northern, absolutely zero bullshit.

Yesterday in Central London, for 2 hours 45 minutes, an audience was quiet. They didn’t use their phones, didn’t talk, didn’t rustle packaging noisily. Just enjoyed a movie of exceptional quality together in total silence except to clap or cheer. It was beautiful. It may never happen again.

I thought this was magnificent.

Actually casting Scottish people feels like cheating doesn’t it?

The fact that Nick Offerman really likes Highlander is further proof that he’s one of the good ones.

This was good and deserved to do better at the box office. Properly crafted and heartfelt, not cynical production line slop.

I even saw a film critic describe this (fantastic) poster as “so fucking ugly”.

The discourse around this film and this trailer is completely unhinged.

This looks incredible imho.

At the very least the actors are talented and Emerald Fennell is an interesting filmmaker with a great eye for a striking image.

Durham is a beautiful place.

One consequence of being obsessed with The Sopranos from an early age is that whenever Journey’s Don’t Stop Believing comes on in a pub (which it does a lot), I instantly get choked up at the thought of Tony, Carmella & AJ sat in that little booth trying to enjoy one last family meal before the end…

So great to see the greatest actor of his generation return to the big screen where he belongs…

Excellent thread. Some of the most incisive film (and political) criticism I’ve read in ages.

What wasn’t so great were the guys next to us who giggled and whispered constantly throughout the entire film like Beavis and Butthead doing the world’s worst DVD commentary 👎

Just out of Weapons, Zach Cregger’s follow up to Barbarian.

It’s good! Funny and creepy in equal measure with a lot of nightmarish imagery, ‘holy shit’ moments and allegory that I’m still mulling over.

Feels like a modern fairy tale.

And this might be recency bias but I think I had the best Guinness of my life last night.

Apologies to the many Dublin establishments that have given me many fine pints over the years.

First time visiting Belfast. It’s such a great city and I’ll definitely be back. Feels a lot like Glasgow (highly complimentary).

Yeah it did feel as if Marvel were extra determined not to mess this one up, given their patchy track record over the last few years, and so they maybe played it a bit safe and straightforward, cutting back on subplots etc.

Felt there was at least a 20 minute longer cut at some point.

My expectations were low but this was good fun.

The cast has bags of charisma and great chemistry, and sometimes that’s all you need. I also liked the optimistic 1960s vision of the future.

Marvel could do a lot worse than base the MCU around them going forward.

Have you never seen The Wire?

If so, definitely see The Wire asap!

Rectify is so different to The Wire that it’s hard to compare them, but I definitely think about it more often.

It’s a lot slower, smaller in scale and far less plot driven, but it creeps up on you bit by bit like a great book.

The absolute best TV show you’ve never seen. A one-of-a-kind masterpiece.

And currently impossible to stream legally in the UK.

It’s very hard to even track down any DVD copies.

But if you can find it, I promise you won’t regret watching it.

Saw F1 earlier. Enjoyed it quite a bit.

Sometimes you just need a big, loud, cheesy action film with a gigantic movie star.

Unbelievably great racing scenes. Good performances. Deceptively tight script.

Very, very silly and the dialogue is 100% pure camembert but I had fun.
