My FAVORITE work from back then? I dunno. But it's certainly the one I think about most often.

It was such a shock to see this familiar painting in a faraway place, and M-L's face reflected my mood so perfectly that I cried a bit. It helped me feel real, and helped my emotions feel real.

Twenty-some years later, I was in Manhattan for work. It was hot and everybody seemed as miserable as I felt. I wandered kind of aimless into the Met... there they were.

I saw them on a tour of the Des Moines Art Center a few times while I was growing up, and they freaked me out. Mary-Louise's gaze in particular felt very piercing in person, and seemed to follow me around the room.
