Every 1/10th of a degree of warming we prevent is a profound gift to our children & grandchildren, and to their children & grandchildren. We should aim to prevent as much warming as possible AND improve the lives of everyone alive today through poverty alleviation & better health. Walk + chew gum.

I wrote about how Border Patrol taking the lead in immigration operations mirrors a shift that happens often in concentration-camp regimes, including Nazi Germany, and some ways we can respond.

Calling all ensemble forecast system enthusiasts! The State of Texas is funding development of a new ensemble prediction system (100 members, 2km grid spacing) with an embedded WoFS interface, to be developed at Texas Tech! Passing along 3 open research scientist positions towards that development:

Trump Administration confirms that NSF AI meteorology institute funding cut because of "climate hysteria" Ending of NOAA billion dollar climate disaster tracking another example of us becoming less prepared for a future affected by climate change.

NPR ran a story last night about NSF terminating funding for AI focused meteorology research & the (IMO) insane explanation they got from OMB. I shared my perspective on this and our continued insistence to shoot ourselves in the foot when it comes to scientific R&D. tinyurl.com/2kzujwz8

This is SUCH an important point. Most people are worried about climate change: but most people feel helpless and think nothing’s being done (so why should they do anything?)

This is why my weekly newsletter always includes good news on climate solutions as well as actions we can take!

Fair point! Even the CMCE "dry" solution still carries a lot of impacts. I just think the uncertainty is fascinating. The next 24 hours still have the Canadian with the least QPF, but even that solution is very impactful for western CO!

Lots of uncertainty amongst the NBM QMD membership too! The Canadian ensemble is all in on a drier scenario (100% of CMCE in Cluster 1) whereas the rest of the global ensemble solutions have a much larger QPF footprint. Really interesting to see such large differences at this short a lead time!

Exactly! This and taking breaks from newsfeeds when feeling overwhelmed. If we burn out we can't be effective later on - taking breaks and focusing on community helps. (Not saying I don't relate to the feelings of hopelessness/helplessness tho, cause that's def something a lot of us are navigating.)

For example, this is why I repeatedly emphasize the value of ensemble forecasting over cherry-picking scary looking deterministic model maps that show the worst possible outcome.

At no point was the multi-model consensus showing more than a moderate probability of a landfall.
