The Jewel Box is an open star cluster visible as a faint smudge with the naked eye under dark skies. It is located 6,440 light years away towards the constellation Crux, The Southern Cross. The first person to recognise it as a cluster of individual stars was Nicolas Louis de Lacaille during his visit to Cape Town in 1752. The name of the cluster originates from John Herschel's later observations in the 1830's, also from Cape Town, and his resulting vivid description:

"A most vivid and beautiful cluster, though neither a large nor a rich one, is yet an extremely brilliant and beautiful object when viewed through an instrument of sufficient aperture to show distinctly the very different colour of its constituent stars, which give it the effect of a superb piece of fancy jewellery"

The bright orange star in the centre of the cluster is known as Kappa Crucis. It provides a striking contrast with the rest of the hot blue cluster members. Although the cluster is a mere 14 million years young this star has already reached the red giant phase of its life and will most likely explode in a brilliant supernova within the next few million years.

The cluster has ben photographed by a wide array of professional telescopes, including ESO's VLT and La Silla observatories and the Hubble Space Telescope. Improving public transit is a climate solution! 🚎 Free buses β€œis not as sexy as something like solar. But these are the exact type of policies we’re going to need to actually address climate change, because it addresses people’s standards of living.” - Dan Jasper https://bit.ly/3KA1X6E

I've been in climate comms for 10+ years and I expect it will be highly useful!
Wondering if there's any chance I could also purchase a PDF of the book from you/your publisher directly?
My experience with Google ebook highlights and annotations has been extremely glitchy the last 6 months or so.

The thing to understand about "age verification" laws is that they are not just for kids

The only way to "stop kids from doing xyz online" using age-gating is to demand a government ID (or invasive biometric face scan) from EVERYONE.

This means associating your gov ID with EVERYTHING YOU DO ONLINE

This is a great reframing. And also consider this same question within the framework of orbital debris. How many do we need knowing that once they are defunct there is a time delay before they are removed from the system.

I worked on WDFW's climate risk assessment so this is especially heartwarming. Every vulnerability assessment and adaptation plan should have accompanying works of art and poetry to celebrate implementation.

Don’t stuff your alt text with keywords without context. If your alt text is just a collection of keywords, it will just sound like a gibberish string. It won’t describe what’s actually in the image, and won't help a blind user get a context or content of the image.

In the Fight Against Fascism, Libraries Should Be Defended β€” Not Defunded Libraries represent the kind of infrastructure progressive leaders must fortify at all costs, especially in this moment.

Libraries are sites of refuge, where curiosity is nurtured, where people find shelter, education, entertainment, job assistance, skill-building programs, and access to resources that would otherwise be out of reach.

Really important to stress that the Crown Jewels of the US higher education system were never the Ivies or elite SLACs (other countries have equivalents of these) but the well-funded, large, cheap, and excellently staffed public state university systems bringing high quality education to the masses.

End of fossil fuel era inches closer as Cop30 deal agreed after bitter standoff Wealthy countries agree to triple funds for countries to tackle climate impacts, but deforestation and critical minerals blocked from final deal

After two weeks of #COP30 negotiations, countries agreed to BEGIN DISCUSSIONS on fossil fuel phase out. And as the article says, "they achieved this incremental progress only in the teeth of implacable opposition from oil-producing countries."

THIS is the problem with requiring unanimous decisions.
