If you have a laptop-internal mic (however crappy) do you get the same clicks when recording from that? That might narrow it down to the particular USB mic or something else that's hogging the USB.

IMO most Brits will just roll their eyes and do it. It'll be any web site where you can post. But if they don't collect personal information (like Bluesky) they can only go on the IP to identify a UK user. So VPNs will get around it, for those who care enough.
