Just got back from the doctor's. The bad news is that tests have revealed I have Onomatopoeia.
Naturally concerned, I asked, 'What's that?'
'I'm afraid,' he replied, looking up from his notes with a serious expression. 'It's exactly what it sounds like.'

โ€œAmerica is the wealthiest nation on Earth, but its people are mainly poor, and poor Americans are urged to hate themselves. To quote the American humorist Kin Hubbard, 'It ainโ€™t no disgrace to be poor, but it might as well be.' It is in fact a crime for an American to be poor, even though America is a nation of poor. Every other nation has folk traditions of men who were poor but extremely wise and virtuous, and therefore more estimable than anyone with power and gold. No such tales are told by the American poor. They mock themselves and glorify their betters. The meanest eating or drinking establishment, owned by a man who is himself poor, is very likely to have a sign on its wall asking this cruel question: 'if youโ€™re so smart, why ainโ€™t you rich?' There will also be an American flag no larger than a childโ€™s hand โ€“ glued to a lollipop stick and flying from the cash register.

Americans, like human beings everywhere, believe many things that are obviously untrue. Their most destructive untruth is that it is very easy for any American to make money. They will not acknowledge how in fact hard money is to come by, and, therefore, those who have no money blame and blame and blame themselves. This inward blame has been a treasure for the rich and powerful, who have had to do less for their poor, publicly and privately, than any other ruling class since, say Napoleonic times. Many novelties have come from America. The most startling of these, a thing without precedent, is a mass of undignified poor. They do not love one another because they do not love themselves.โ€

England is a very dry place: London gets as much rain as Jerusalem.

With climate change, the south will need to prepare for even more acute water shortages.

Completely agree. Iโ€™ve been a local gov journalist for 12 years and have reported on the fall of local government in that time. Itโ€™s had a massive impact on the fabric of our society, on what makes our communities work. Itโ€™s about more than just bins and roads, itโ€™s about a sense of place and pride.

SOME GRAMMATICAL VOICES FOR USE IN SCIENTIFIC WRITING

ACTIVE VOICE
e.g.
Our team collected samples and then we tested them.

CLICKBAIT VOICE
e.g.
We collected some samples...
You won't believe what happened next!

PASSIVE VOICE
e.g.
Samples were collected and tested.

HAIKU VOICE
e.g.
Quiet science lab.
Workers arrive with samples.
The testing begins.

PASSIVE-AGGRESSIVE VOICE
e.g. We did all the collecting and testing.
No need to thank us.
Just doing our job.

CONSPIRACY VOICE
e.g.
Mysterious "Samples" were harvested and covertly "tested" by so-called scientists.

Things I learned recently:

* Edinburghโ€™s seaweed is collected and dumped in landfill because it is too contaminated with wet wipes to be composted.

* Most packaging labelled โ€˜compostableโ€™ is not usually compostable.

Donald Trumpโ€™s unhinged & hate-filled Easter message.

Heโ€™s got away with untold crimes, lies & offences. Heโ€™s achieved the highest office in the land. Twice. Heโ€™s lining his pockets on an industrial scale & persecuting his enemies for fun. But heโ€™s still a miserable, bitter, humourless & furious man. Because deep inside, he knows *exactly* who he is.
