Cropped view of the previous image, zoomed into the area containing the previously mentioned Lunar X and Lunar V, which are circled and labelled. The X is formed from the rims of the craters Blanchinus, La Caille, and Purbach, while the V is formed from the rim of the Ukert crater plus a few small craters that surround it.

Here's the quarter Moon from about a week ago. You can juuust see the Lunar X near the top left, and the Lunar V near the top middle — these are a light-and-shadow effect created by the rims of a few craters near the terminator for just a few hours every first quarter

OMG.

Look at the Trifid Nebula.

Never seen or known it to be surrounded in full by the blue reflection nebula, and I have photographed it many times.

Full announcement happening at 8am LA time (just before the Pulsar Conference starts here), which I think is about 1am Sydney time.

Can't wait!

zoomed in view of the previous image, cropped to an area that covers most of the spots. A tiny circle shows the Earth to scale, with a label and an arrow pointing to it that says "EARTH". This tiny circle, containing everyone you know and everywhere you've been, is smaller than almost every single sunspot visible.

at this scale the Earth is like 5 pixels. a microscopic speck. a tiny little thing. almost every single one of these spots is bigger. 🤯

Photo of the Sun, seen as a white orb with a gentle texture to it and various spots. Active Region (AR) 4100 is visible just below the centre of the disk with 26 spots, and AR 4099 is just above and to the left of centre with 13 spots.
ARs 4096 (bottom left), 4101 (left of 4100), and 4104 (above+right of 4100) are also visible, with 1-3 spots each.
North is approximately down.

Trying solar photography again, there's some nice active regions right in the middle! AR 4100 is just below centre, and AR 4099 is just above and to the left. AR4100 produced a huge flare earlier that should light up the auroras in the coming nights!

There was snow in southern Brazil a couple days ago, IIRC a few temperature records got broken in the south and southeast as well. Not totally unheard of before June, but had a bigger volume than previous years.

Depiction of the Earth, its rotational and magnetic axes, and the Van Allen belts around it. The rotational axis is depicted vertically, and the magnetic axis is slightly tilted *and* off-centre with respect to the rotational axis. This offset brings the Van Allen radiation belts slightly closer to the Earth on one side, and causes a "weak spot" in Earth's magnetic field over South America and the South Atlantic, known as the South Atlantic Anomaly.

What really messes me up ab. Earth's magnetic field is how it's not actually concentric with the Earth itself, despite most material representing like that—this gives us the South Atlantic Anomaly! It's not as offset as the ice giants', but it's there and not brought up as often as I think it should

Black and white photo of the Sun. North is approximately down.
Three groups of sunspots (Active Regions, ARs) are visible:
- AR 4079 is the biggest one, at the left side of the sun's disk, with 33 spots covering about 3.8 billion square kilometres.
- AR 4081 is visible near the middle as a smaller group containing 10 sunspots covering approx. 304 million square kilometres.
- AR 4082 is right of centre, containing 8 sunspots covering approx. 426 million square kilometres.

Picture of a region of sky around the Lagoon Nebula (near centre) and the Trifid Nebula (above and to the left of the Lagoon), both in Sagittarius. The Lagoon Nebula is seen in mixing shades of pink, cyan, and white, while the Trifid has two distinct sections, one in magenta and one in blue/cyan. The Trifid's magenta section, an emission nebula, has dust filaments that appear to cut it into thirds, giving it its name. Its blue/cyan portion is a reflection nebula.
The field covers an area approximately 6.5 degrees wide by 3.7 degrees tall. A few open and globular clusters can also be seen in the image. A bright area containing dust, gas, and stars from the central region of the Milky Way is visible at the bottom right.
