Interesting. I always thought "T" referenced rail centric (subway?) lines (red, orange, green...). No idea it was the T from MBTA...

Former HS Math teacher looking for my next role. I write about math, education, music, food, parenting, travel, tinkering... all with a side of snarkiness, sarcasm and self-deprecation.

10.08.2025 02:39 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I was able to get the vast majority of students on-board, but yeah... those few stubborn students who memorized their way through k-9 (I taught mostly 10-12), did not like being "forced" to actually think (and I was stubborn enough to not bend).
10.08.2025 02:15 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0My last handful of years in the classroom were very student-centered. I always had a few students push-back "just tell me what to do"
"We disagree on what it means to be 'a teacher'- it sounds like you view me as the transmitter of knowledge, whereas I view myself as the facilitator of learning."
(and yes, I know the silver line isn't technically the T, but it sounded more Bostonian... )
09.08.2025 23:49 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Last time I flew into Boston I took the T to South Station, got out, walked the half a block to a Dunkins. I walk in to Guster playing and the guy behind me yelled at me to keep on moving.
Everything felt right in the world.
For me, I wasn't drawn to any curricula, so I wrote "my own" Alg2, PC and AB classes. The bird was a place I could go to engage with instructional approaches, find activities... But that requires hundreds of like-minded teachers in a place willing, able to engage at that level on the daily.

I think part of it was society. Teachers knowing they could do better & trying to process together. Now change is met with resistance & can be exhausting.
Many of us have left the classroom &/or, sadly, accept our silo/status quo.
The struggle I have is *everything* requires a check... Which many are too lazy to do, and those of us who aren't, lose faith.... when it f*cks up such remedial things, how are we to trust it for more complex tasks?
In time it might be great, IMO it's not ready to be where it is.
๐ฏ At this point EVERYTHING AI produces, no matter how basic or complex, needs to be heavily guided then proofed/edited. This might make the original task easier than creation, but isn't the full lift that many think it is...
09.08.2025 14:28 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0AI is the solution they say??
"AI can replace/ supplement/ help... teachers"
This is bad....

To be fair, this is for the outdoor kitchen and was significantly cheaper than any single of my main kitchen knives...
Yay! Welcome back.
What'd you miss?
Its 2025.
Chaos.
I'm not religious, but I might need to adopt this and my morning mantra...

I honestly think that the quest to get everything "right" is one of the reasons for the downfall of the democratic party... Nobody is perfect, our opinions aren't going to align with everybody at all times, and when somebody (inevitably) messes up, we throw them to the wolves.
The particular irony of today is I "was cancelled" for saying that I think Democrats can be too quick to cancel people for not behaving in lockstep.
09.08.2025 04:58 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I know I have opinions and can be a bit unfiltered from time to time, but still makes me sad when I discover that people I respect block me rather than engage...
such is life.

Stay involved!
When we moved to Denver (2016) my wife got super active in the union (mostly focused on workload caps)
She just wrapped up a (fairly) successful term as the co-chair for the team negotiating teacher contract terms for the district.
It's not just her, but you can see where CO was...
I couldn't believe it i had to give it a try last night....
(well, that's not true at all... given the ridiculousness I've seen from AI, I could definitely believe it)

I can't focus that well with music on. It tends to distract me. Today's work is fairly mindless, so i get a soundtrack...
08.08.2025 16:10 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Yuuuup. I've witnessed my wife implement sooo many systems only to fizzle out. Then "we" get to navigate the residual clutter from the litany of special "tools" accumulated... but cannot be thrown out/donated because there is a chance they'll be used again (still waiting for that day).

07.08.2025 16:03 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I have visited some schools that invested in classroom sets/ had the nSpire as their required tool... and it seems neat, but yeah, feels like most teachers (at least that I've worked with) aren't able to support the way they can with the 8x's
(Altho same goes very pretty much every other brand)
I feel like TI still has a firm hold on the market
I was raised on the 85, so it's the world I know
I know some schools love the NSpire line, which Im sure are fine, just haven't invested in the learning curve
I was given a NumWorks, which is neat, but haven't invested the time
I've seen Casios too
Wasnt my best work, but the family enjoyed it.
