I was watching with a UT guy... Definitely had a conversation about Texas Dick kickers
(For those of you who don't follow UT football, they have (at least) two kickers in the NFL, last names Dickson and Dicker)
I really thought the kicker should have gotten the mvp. Dude scored 17 points.

I was going to Sous Vide them (if you have a SV, this recipe is amazing... & if you dont have one, it's a worthy $100 investment)
But then I found a Korean smoked ribs recipe, & it's 60ยฐ out, so i fired up the smoker
www.seriouseats.com/sous-vide-po...
2 hours in.
Decided to try a Korean inspired party rib... But 3 racks of improv felt like a bit too much of a commitment, so I did half Korean, half more "standard"
Well, apparently I'm smoking 3 racks of ribs today...I swore the pack had 2.
Gonna need to make more dry rub...
I'm still a bumbling 17 year old idiot in my mind... just have to wake up to pee multiple times a night.
08.02.2026 15:46 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I grew up in a Midwest university town. Weird mix of kids of farmers and kids of academics.
Half the state championship soccer team was in my AB calc class.
Best baseball pitcher drew the cover of the yearbook.
First stand cellist was a football captain.
I didn't actually solve it but my mind immediately went to lots of scaled, 30-60-90s
08.02.2026 05:32 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I always gave plenty of extension problems throughout all topics... how can you extend what you know in order solve questions you've never seen before?
I reality they're rarely going to solve *ANY* of "standard" problems they see in HS math... but learning how to adapt ones knowledge? That's usable
Yes! I used to exclusively do the first way and was usually fine accepting
[ln(16)+ln(3)]/[ln(4)-ln(9)]
Then later in my career ended up preferring the second (less writing and logs to track)
ln(16*3)/ln(4/9)
Then it was added side exercise to justify the two are equivalent
I used to do that.
I now find it significantly easier to use properties of exponents and rewrite each side a*b^x
I always like to give these, there are a number of different ways of solving them (Im partial to one method in particular)
07.02.2026 21:15 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 2 ๐ 0Tangential thought- I used to give a log table question on a problem set.
I've never even thought of an anti-log table.. but it makes sense that it's a thing
I always felt like 90% of solving logarithms/exponentials is getting it in a configuration where i can rewrite it in the other form...
07.02.2026 21:05 โ ๐ 3 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I don't know that I would actually use 10^log... here, i would just "put it in exponential form"
log(x+2) = 5
x+2 = 10^5
But how would i describe "undoing" log(x-2)=log(x^2)?
Still probably wouldn't do 10^... just claim that if the logs are the same base, the arguments must be the same.
Josh Johnson has a couple solid bits about this...

Hear me out- Bad Bunny brings out a halftime show guest, Bruce Springsteen, and they do a duet of "Born in the USA"
07.02.2026 16:47 โ ๐ 6 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 3 ๐ 0Every time somebody posts something like this i'm reminded of a proof (from a calc perspective) of e that i really liked but can't remember.
The premise was the only exponential, a^x, where the tangent line at x=1 passes thru the origin, has a base of e.
Just got an email from my son's school distract that he has missed an "equivalent of 2.92593 days of school."
Makes me wonder, how do they take attendance to get it down to 5 (FIVE) decimal places?
Down to the minute?
The second?
I opened the fridge this morning & was reminded that I had been thawing a rack of ribs... so it was an impromptu smoking day.
Timing was all off (bc life & a 6 hour cook don't always align...) but they turned out pretty damn tasty.
While I know leaving the classroom was the right thing for me and my family, there are certain things i still miss...

It was an Arts school- it's not like sports where they have an away game that starts at 4... it's extra dance practice, or stage crew... all in house stuff (where academic teachers are already strapped for time and aren't willing to let students out for more arts time)
05.02.2026 16:04 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I was working at an arts school at the time (didn't stay for the next year) and they were really concerned about how to get in all the after school stuff in with a later start. I think we started at 7:20... first block was rough. But we also had 100min classes, which were rough no matter what.
05.02.2026 15:19 โ ๐ 1 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0My great-aunt, the last surviving member of my grandparents generation, passed away. Not a surprise, she had lived a long healthy, complete, life.
She & her husband were the only people from that gen at our wedding 13 years ago. Photographer captured this amazing pic.
This article is behind a paywall... A few years ago Denver School Board passed a resolution that all middle and high schools have to start no earlier than 8:20.
