Great breakdown here by Jimmy Rollins.

Thomson says the Dodgers β€œdid a great job disguising the wheel play.” But they showed it on the previous pitch and Stott said he knew the wheel play was on. Unclear if Castellanos knew.

The Phillies, through all of their faults and failures, have made the championship round 5 times since the Sixers last did

I’m just worried the drop from alpha superstar to supporting star happened sooner than expected. Also wonder how much that wrist really bothered him all year

From Matt Gelb in the Athletic

β€œThere was a fundamental breakdown in the actual play. The wheel is so rare, but the Phillies practice it. They tell their hitters to pull back the bunt and hack away if they see it. Stott saw the Dodgers run the wheel on the first pitch of the at-bat when he took a ball. The Phillies continued to give him the bunt sign, but Mookie Betts did not dart from shortstop to third base until the last moment. He still had a head start on Castellanos, who hesitated as the bunt happened.”

So if I’m understanding this right, the Phillies usually tell their hitters to back off of a bunt if they see a wheel play. But after seeing it in the first attempt in the biggest at bat of the season, they told Stott to keep the bunt on anyway

Honestly at least it’s the 9 pm start so we already know we don’t have to stay up

Then why the hell has Ranger been β€œavailable” for two games out of the bullpen and never used?

The players are the ones to blame but doing something major there either isn’t feasible or hurts your chances of even making the playoffs in the first place. Changing the manager is the least painful dramatic change you can make. Doesn’t mean it’ll work but you’re at that point

I don’t like doing alternate timeline stuff because who’s to say Bader still gets a hit or Castellanos doesn’t get thrown out at home, but acknowledging that they probably still have a better chance if Stott stands there for three strikes

I didn’t like the Robertson decision game one but understood the logic behind it and the argument for it

That bunt was way, way worse

There’s a good chance that Jhoan Duran pitches no more than 3 innings in this postseason to give you an idea of how much having a Closer matters when you can’t hit

I loved the Luzardo trade and I don’t even think I envisioned 6 innings of one hit ball in the postseason against the best lineup in baseball

Remember that Mookie Betts grounder that Trea Turner made that nice play to his left on to end the third inning? That's the only batted ball of 91 mph or harder since the first inning.

The Phillies hardest hit ball tonight was Kyle Schwarber’s pop up in the first inning

I’ve been to at least one playoff game every year since 2022. Energy has slowly declined each year. Part of that is of course the team’s overall performance. Part of that is also people coming because they want to be at the β€œevent”

Brandon Marsh playing center in between Otto Kemp and Nick Castellanos

Castellanos was probably always going to start against Snell. Bader being out forces Marsh to start against a LHP and Kemp to play the OF
