These embryo-selection startups are clearly feeding into an alt-right ecosystem that revels in techno-futurism much as such movements have in the past. GWAS participants & parents navigating IVF deserve better than being used as tools to attract the attention of edge lords.
02.08.2025 02:19 β π 70 π 15 π¬ 1 π 0A few thoughts on Herasight, the new embryo selection company. First, their whitepaper (drive.google.com/file/d/1EpFi...) implies that competitors like Nucleus have been marketing and selling grossly erroneous risk estimates. This is shocking if true! π§΅

Similarly, Blacks are PIs on 17% of the terminated grants, although they make only 4% of the total pool. Hispanic PIs and those with disabilities were twice as likely to lose a grant."
Amazing study from Jill Anderson, Megan Demarche and colleagues, integrating species distribution models, reciprocal transplants, snow manipulation and more to test whether a montane plant can adapt to climate change. The sad answer: not without human intervention.

One day left to apply! Not seeing many American applications so far, which puzzles me a little bit. If you have a four-year degree including advanced courses in Ecology or Evolution, you are likely eligible. Happy to answer detailed questions over DM or email.

Born in 1906, computer scientist Grace Hopper invented the first compiler for programming language.
Hopper popularized the idea of machine-independent programming languages & paved the way to develop COBOL. She originated the term "bug" to describe glitches & became a Rear Admiral in the Navy.
I too am recruiting graduate students, postdocs, and a lab technician for my group at UChicago, starting fall 2024! We will be doing exciting work to uncover the limits of plant adaptation in changing environments.

Very excited to share this new preprint led by
former postdocs in the lab Gwonjin Lee and Brian Sanderson (not on bsky yet I think), where we functionally validate (in the native genetic backgrounds) the causal polymorphism underlying a large effect genetic trade-off QTL.
