This is the type of team I’m hoping they keep building. Even when not good, one that works hard and doesn’t lose themselves when they fall behind.

I think the Pens got away with one here. It was remarkably close and generally I think tie goes to the goal, but…I think Anaheim has a fair complaint.

There’s the trying to drive 100mph in 2nd gear that has plagued the Penguins for years now. It’s the first goal I’m frustrated at. The Pens might not be good this year. But the sloppiness is a lot harder to swallow than playing smooth and coming up short.

That hooking call looked pretty weak, but I can’t fault Jarry on the goal (much as I might want to).

I am absolutely down for Mookie/Papi to do a massive “Daaaaaa Jankees lose” as coworkers.

I fully expect Mookie to be in the HoF, so I don’t think that’s something that will be different. My friends will never actually admit I’m right, but every ring he gets helps make it more obvious that I was right.

What more could I ask of sports than to be a way to win arguments with people I love?

I have no particular reason to root for the LA Dodgers except for the fact that I once confidently told friends that Mookie Betts was going to be “Jeter-esque”, in terms of how good he was going to be. They gave me endless crap. He has more Golden Gloves. More Silver Sluggers. More HRs. Needs rings.

Of course, I expect that Rakell may be gone by the end of the season. But if he doesn’t fit, I think we can get better even with a worse player. I mean, Sid (and the Pens) looked good with Drew O’Connor up on the first line. I think sometimes, good players can make one another worse.

I do miss DOC

I do not like the Crosby / Rust / Rakell line.

I can’t actually put a specific metric to it, so it’s entirely vibes-based. But it just doesn’t feel cohesive. I think it’s mostly Rakell. Not that he’s bad, but just that he doesn’t fit with Sid as well, like they’re playing NEAR, not WITH each other.

I will make fun of the Penguins when they fall back into some of the more horrific habits they’ve displayed, but they do look different this year.

Not necessarily a lot BETTER, but it’s a type of hockey that seems more fun to watch and it definitely feels much more modern AND easier to build with.

Crazy to realize that over the last three years, I’ve managed to catch the first NHL game of both Connor Bedard and Matthew Schaefer, especially knowing they’ll probably be the grizzly veterans my son (and any other hypothetical children) grow up idolizing if they ever watch/play hockey.

Pens feel faster so far. More apt to get physical. Unfortunately, as the game rolls on, I’m seeing their habit of feeling like they’re just doing too much. Like they’re trying to get up to 90 and just standing up on the pedal rather than shifting.

Just out stripping gears rather than being smooth.
