Compared to the other Sandy Frank Japanese dubs, this honestly wasn't that campy. Sure, watching toy models blow up was fun, and the villains were essentially cheap Bond villains, but this was nothing like Gamera or Time of the Apes. I guess "Mighty Jack" refers to the organization and not the ship.

Crow: You know, this isn't a very good movie.

Mighty Jack in the books. Crow pretty much sums it up. The jokes are funny throughout, but this was a tough one basically there wasn't much of a plot.

All: Just give us a script that makes no freakin' sense, we'll try so hard to sloooow the plot down.

My God. I'm about to watch my 7th Sandy Frank flick in a row.

I took a few days off, but it's time to continue Vol. 22. Time of the Apes was silly fun, so let's see what Mighty Jack has to offer. Here we go.

Oddly, I have both McCaffrey AND Henry on my fantasy team this year. lol.

Mmmhmmmm. I still look back fondly on the Jake Plummer years (although of course Peyton's time with the team was magical, and Denver is basically his home now). Al Wilson is also probably my favorite middle linebacker of all time. However, I'd trade it all for one Rockies World Series title.

That said, if that could PLEASE play a complete game rather than thriving or dying in the 4th, that would be great...

Okay. That Broncos 4th quarter was absolutely ridiculous! What a comeback!

Plotwise, it's a Japanese Planet of the Apes clone, but it also feels like Land of the Lost at times. The soundtrack is also quintessentially '70s, so it oscillates between funk and Spaghetti Western at the drop of a hat. An absolute trip. Honestly, I had more fun with this than all 5 Gamera flicks.

Time of the Apes in the books. I didn't realize until after the credits that Sandy Frank crammed 26 television episodes into one movie! That would explain why it's simultaneously ploddingly slow and hella exciting at odd times. This movie is a hot mess...and might be required viewing. KILLER jokes.

Servo: They're going to give him a 21 Turds Salute!

Legit one of the best lines I've ever heard from this show.

Servo: Meanwhile...on CHIMPS!

Crow: Hey! You kids behave, or I'll turn this plot around!

If this keeps up, I'll consider this movie required viewing.

This movie is an absolute trip. I love it!

Crow: Hey! It's Gamera!

Servo: No, no, no, no, no!

Crow: Just kidding.

It was a pretty positive day! Let's build on that momentum by concluding the night with Time of the Apes, the first flick from Volume 22. I still have some beer, so here we go!

It's the kind of homer that you have to play on repeat because it's such a sweet swing. Unfortunately, it broke Lidge.

Catching you up to speed, @optimstie.bsky.social. There were moments where I truly embraced the shitsh--I mean, lovely spectacle of all five Gamera movies. 🤣 However, there were others where I was ready for the concept album to be over. All five at once is a lot! Onward to Volume 22 this weekend.

I was late to the Maiden party, so I didn't hear this one until 2004 or so when I listened to Edward the Great. I thought it was great, but my Maiden friends were all, "...That's like their worst song." I must have outgrown it, because I haven't listened to it in years.

Vol. 21 in the books. Since this was entirely Gamera, it was basically a concept album. Some may love all of these, but I definitely have to be in a mood. Rankings:

Gamera: The most novel.
Guiron and Zigra: The dumbest, but some great jokes.
Barugon: Sort of competent?
Gaos: Almost fell asleep.

The way I see it, Guiron's ending sort of made it seem like MST3K was paying homage of sorts. It was silly, but sweet. However, because Zigra's plot was even more nonsensical, it felt like the cast was saying, "Okay. We're never doing a Gamera flick again. Please get these away from us."

I should start taking notes for the occasions in which someone cracks a joke and then the actor in the movie actually parrots it.

Crow: I want a Coke.

Child (waking up): Can I have a Coke?

Joel and Servo: Ahhhhhhhhh! You called it...

Crow: Sister, that dress is headed for trouble, and it's taking you with it!

Okay. The riffs are pretty great in this one.

It's pretty funny that even the sketches are like, "Yeah. We're pretty tired of these movies."

I'll finish the Gamera set tonight with Gamera Vs. Zikra. I thought the ending to Gamera Vs. Guiron was a nice send-off for the kaiju as evidenced by Joel and the Bots (and Gypsy!) singing the theme in Japanese. I suspect they may have gone back to the well one too many times, but let's see.

Although it's definitely not a high ranking MST3K episode for me, I will say that the outro is one of the most memorable of the series. Well done.

To be certain, the Gamera movies have gotten progressively worse during this exercise. With one more left to view, let's see what sort of note the team ends on.

Gamera Vs. Guiron in the books. I hesitantly went into this one due to Chaplin's quote. It's a ridiculous and bad movie...which works in its favor. Compared to the previous movie, which was just boring, this was at least entertaining. The boys also found their footing and cracked better zingers.
