Dassan didn't become a slave and ended up in the crown prince selections though, and might befriend the person who will probably manage to get slavery abolished, partly because of hearing his story, but that's after the book...

It's a sort of tradition in the poorest parts of Yanipol in families of serfs, to have the eldest boy be the 'tax boy', and to not get too attached to him for that reason. Although it's not that common and extreme poverty is less common nowadays.
Most people don't know it's still a thing.
