I’ve only watched the first two episodes so far, but it has annoyed me much less than the previous five Star Trek shows. Whether that’s lowered expectations or what, I don’t know.

I never said they didn’t exist. I never said that some people don’t keep track of the minutae of their spending.

What I said was the *majority* of people do not actually understand their spending as well as they think they do, and are extremely subject to perception biases.

I don’t especially want a corporation datamining me. I definitely don’t need more garbage on my phone. But what would I even do with that information?

With enough work I could slice and dice my data and compare it against annual income growth.

But I already know I’m subject to lifestyle creep.

Also if this data is so readily available, why are people not presenting it?

When these conversations happen why is there not a plethora of “here’s what my app shows on honey baked ham purchases over the past eight years?”

Instead the response is always some variation of “I know my spending!”

I believe the vast, vast majority of Americans (including myself) lack this skill, yes.

I would categorize it more as a result of being unable to see past natural biases, but call it what you will.

Most adult Americans don’t remember who the president was in the year 2020. Let alone what they paid for colby jack.

I quite frankly do not believe that someone who is cooking their own meals can *accurately* tell me what they paid for dozens of different items over the course of multiple years.

No, I’m saying that monthly and yearly expenditures are the *only* thing people reliably track.

Because unless you are, year after year always purchasing the exact same type and quantity of groceries, those metrics are not, and cannot be a reliable indicator of how much inflation affects you.

Yes but how many of those price changes can you accurately remember from year to year, decade to decade?

Yes people look at the prices of the things they buy when they’re buying. I don’t believe that they can accurately remember how individual prices have changed over long period of times.

Like I said, I don’t memorize exact item prices. I have a vague sense of how my grocery bill has gone up, but I couldn’t tell you the exact dollar figure for any one item. And part of that has just changed with lifestyle and preference changes. I don’t shop remotely the same way I have in the past.

See, I don’t buy that people memorize exact item prices. Most (maybe not) people are going to be looking at the bottom line of their receipt—not the minutae of individual items.

Do you? Do you buy exactly the same groceries in exactly the same quantities from exactly the same place? Do you make the same meals and consume them at exactly the same rate? Do you keep a spreadsheet tabulating every purchase year over year?

When can we start the conversation about Liz Cheney Derangement Syndrome? I’ve never seen a political endorsement break so many brains.

I think in the short term, yes: terrorizing non-white people is a major goal for them. But beyond that? Its not like they’ve been able to stop women from getting credit cards, or re-segregate schools, or ban the teaching of evolution.

Something that makes American politics so asymmetrical is the Left insisting that every criticism of the GOP includes equal excoriation of Democrats when the Right has never and will never criticize Republicans.

What does this gain us? Feeling morally superior online? How many lives is that worth?
