Great, insightful discussion, Rob, on todays program!
I particularly loved your observation in that nationalism can be a good thing in regard to protecting democracy! π @robgoodman.bsky.social

3) It helps explain why double consciousness largely drops out of Du Boisβs later work. By 1930s, Du Bois had turned to a policy of Black separatism through worker co-operatives. I argue this turn represents an attempted escape from the burdens of double consciousnessβ
7/n
2) It sheds new light on The Souls of Black Folk, where Du Bois develops the concept, as a work of rhetoric. I propose that we can read it as two superimposed texts: one addressed to a doubly-conscious audience, and one addressed to an audience that is not.
6/n
Thinking of the rhetorical roots of double consciousness can do 3 things for our understanding of Du Bois:
Β
1) It clarifies the βcausal mechanismβ Du Bois proposes for double consciousnessβhow an oppressive sense of being watched can also generate political insight and power.
5/n
Rhetoric is one of the most influential sources of the idea of a divided selfβa consciousness of being watchedβas source of anguish and power. I look at how Du Bois transposed this idea from elite rhetorical training to the experience of racial oppression, dramatically raising political stakes.
4/n
In fact, though, rhetoric was at the center of Du Boisβs scholarship for a long time. I show how Du Boisβs rhetorical studies shaped his famous idea of βdouble consciousness.β
3/n
It starts with the story of how Du Bois placed second in a Harvard oratorical contestβand how ex-President Hayes (the one who ended Reconstruction) took that as evidence that Du Bois wasnβt cut out for further study, rejecting him for a PhD scholarship.
2/n
I have a new article out in History of Political Thought on rhetoric and W.E.B. Du Bois. Itβs called βThe Rhetorical Roots of Du Boisβs Double Consciousness.β
