Buddy Cianci had the hurricane barriers closed so his upriver entrance on a dinghy to a riverside event would go more smoothly or something. Almost caused a failure of the adjacent power plant that relies on the flow of the Providence River.

Please be more accurate in your social posts. No *downtown* bridges would survive.

Oh yeah, lolita is a thing having to do with a certain style of dress. Has nothing to do with Nabokov as far as I can tell.

You know very well that most people aren't thinking very deeply about that sort of thing. They're chasing convenience. Blaming the potential victim helps nobody.

Car insurance renewal notice just came. Lemonade breaks out the price per car:

2013 Toyota Prius is going up ~20%, both for base rate and per-mile cost
2018 Chrysler Pacific base rate is going up ~10% but the per-mile cost is going down a tenth of a penny

This is due to tariffs, right?

I could scare one up, like "the Muslim-American president" when referring to a corporation's boss, to disambiguate from the "American president," but this is certainly an artificial edge case. I could always do "the company's president, who is Muslim American," and just avoid the issue.

Even when the hyphen serves a purely grammatical, clarifying role? I'm not gonna put pedantry over identity, though: if the folks described by these compound adjectives find the hyphen minimizing, them I'm happy to yeet it.

I disagree. Compound adjectives are generally hyphenated. Like "real-time info" versus "get the info in real time." It's not a comment on the relationships of various overlapping identities, simply a convention to reduce grammatical ambiguity.

Right! Man, I gotta bring my A-game (and "a" game) to a no-edits-allowed grammar chat.

25.06.2025 15:22 β€” πŸ‘ 0    πŸ” 0    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Ah. So, I refreshed myself on grammar and I agree, for a different reason. If it's a compound adjective, hyphenate: Muslim-American mayor. If it's a noun, don't: he is Muslim American.

Is loser an adjective modifying idiot, or is it a compound identity of being a loser and an idiot like Zohran is a Muslim-American?

Oh, I'm not defending the headline, but the relevance of the topic. "Trump big mad that his Truths (sic) aren't binding on sovereign nations" would be more accurate.

One relatively minor consequence of the Iran-Israel conflict is the wide berths flights have to take to avoid missles. This flight from Qatar to Georgia traveled more than double the normal distance, turning a sub-3-hour flight into a 5.5-hour one. www.flightaware.com/live/flight/...
