I think it does have something to do with exchange. The only NOE cross peak is to water. Also the diagonal peak is there at low mixing time between 20 and 80 ms, but disappears at 100 ms or higher.

In my experience it depends on the community. In one I attended in grad school, there was clearly an “in crowd” that did not really encourage students to interact with them. In many others, it’s been much more friendly and open.
