In Flanders Fields
In Flanders fields the poppies blow Between the crosses, row on row, That mark our place; and in the sky The larks, still bravely singing, fly Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days ago
We lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow, Loved and were loved, and now we lie,
In Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:
To you from failing hands we throw The torch; be yours to hold it high.
If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies grow In Flanders fields.

The finale of the great TV comedy show Blackadder goes Forth.
Back then I didn't expect one of the funniest programmes ever to end with a scene that makes me cry every time I see it.
Every single time.

Nothing this administration has done has frightened me about the future more than the dramatic expansion of ICE as a goon squad. Congress needs to be doing oversight of this private army, meanwhile…

Ifill makes an important point here. It’s fundamentally undemocratic, unamerican to wear masks as some sort of thug army of the state.
Nazi comparisons become a lot more apt once they have a thug army acting with impunity. These people should be unmasked before they’re allowed to collaborate more.

Finally watching BBC’s The Mirror and the Light, and of course it’s outstanding. But I really don’t think anything could be better than the novel, which is perfect.

And at least we can see the shuls in the various ghettos around Europe.
One of my favorite parts of traipsing about Europe are the gorgeous little village churches in every little village… and then it strikes me that thousands of village synagogues were destroyed in November 1938 alone.

The way all of these people convinced themselves that Mamdani is antisemitic is a subject far more worthy of media examination than any of the ‘groupthink on campuses!’ thinkpieces we’ve been subjected to

lol. “Russian”
Yeah. פֿײַװל was Russian.
Listen, my father’s grandparents said they came from “Russia” on their immigration forms, but they were listed as Jewish and Hebrew, not Russian, and the Russian people and authorities made sure they knew they weren’t welcome in Russia for centuries.

The proper lens thru which to view NY Jewish cross-generational tensions is the Florida episode of Broad City

The idea of any European trying to school New York on Jewishness is laughable. BHL can fuck all the way off with this take.

Looking forward to learning all about how the right should move left to win elections tomorrow. They should maybe dye their hair pink, learn to love pronouns.

And an eye for talent. Maybe this is the most important. If you delegate to shitty people, that’s worse than not delegating at all.
I wonder if Mamdani has read The Power Broker.

Yup. Like, imagine a modern candidate who could speak English, Spanish, Chinese, Akan, Russian, and Haitian…
La Guardia was off the charts talented. (He spoke English, Italian, Yiddish, German, Hungarian, and Croatian.) He was a progressive but a Republican with support from the socialists.

The Post editorial board says Mamdani’s rise is a “warning.” Because things must be dire for democrats to elect someone with so little experience.
Except, do we really think that experience is what makes an executive great?
I’d much prefer vision, charisma, and the ability to delegate.

Listen… I love me some Elliott Carter, but I’m wise enough to think that we went as far as we could in that direction. I find the ambient adjacent stuff infuriating at times, but I’m hopeful that we will get somewhere interesting AND audience-pleasing eventually.

Yeah… it was a bit much to say Kirk was doing politics “the right way” but it only made me roll my eyes.
As far as rage inducing statements, it was pretty low on my list.
Ezra has frustrated me much more the past weeks by acting like the “basket of deplorables” comment needs reëxamination.

I guess if the above is the reason (and I think it is, because it’s all I’ve ever seen) I don’t understand how it outweighs his years of thoughtful exploration of the issues from a left wing perspective.
Why the freak out when he’s wrong? Is he more influential than I think?
03.11.2025 14:05 — 👍 0 🔁 0 💬 1 📌 0
He said like, one sentence about maybe running pro life candidates in districts where there would be no other chance of a Dem winning. It’s a strategy. One you and I disagree with, but it’s not right wing.
Can you name an antitrans candidate he’s vocally supported? I missed that if he did.
