And, lastly, “it always been done this way” is the hallmark of every abuser. “Just accept it, don’t demand better”. It’s very telling you think lying on a resume is an actual problem in current year. Gimme a break. You will not convince me you aren’t just a Scott Adams clone.

You would obviously object to knowing that a job application you filled out was actually not a real job, and was just market research campaign to gather phone numbers and email addresses to sell accounting software. This is clearly fraud. Cut and dry.

What you are not accounting for is the sheer volume of spam jobs that people are forced to apply for. Needlessly. It is new, and there are data to support this. It is a well documented strategy to create job listings ahead of earnings calls to add numbers to spreadsheets. Don’t take my word for it

Nobody expects to find work immediately, I agree that is not a reasonable expectation. What is new is the use of automation to flood the market with fake jobs which do not exist, and the continued use of debunked pseudoscience. Would it be acceptable if I used an Ouija board in your hiring process?

I think the takeaway here is that I should start doing crimes. Is that the lesson?

If you cannot see the problem with making people waste hours of their time — potentially people who are on unemployment or have no safety net at all, then this is roughly an equivalent exercise.

I’m willing to grant people grace, not the systems that abuse them. 5

Job applications can take upwards of 2-4 hours with all the tests, employment history forms, and multi-round interviews.

Companies will happily waste your time and money just to scrape your data, mislead investors or filter you out based on your head lumps. 4

In cases when the jobs actually do exist, you may not get an interview because of some debunked nonsense — keyword filters, credit checks, employment gap screens and personality tests will pointlessly filter out otherwise high-quality candidates. These methods are digital phrenology. 3

Companies post fake jobs to harvest data from applicants or put out inflated metrics on earnings calls. It is almost impossible to know which jobs are real.

Fake jobs are used to mislead their investors about growth or take advantage of you and collect your personal data. 2

This vaguely reminds me of trying to explain to my parents you can’t just walk into a building with a resume and get hired by demanding a manager. This is the last I’ll speak on this. 1

Didn't expect this post to go viral. Uh, my name is Patrick, I'm a guy who knows Autodesk Maya in ways that would make most people uncomfortable. Please hire me lol.

Let's do this another way. Here are two jobs. One of them is a known ghost job. One of these jobs does not actually exist. Can you tell me, which one is actually real, and which one isn't? Remember, anywhere between 30% and 80% of jobs are ghost jobs.

It has been less useful this go-around, but I suspect that has more to do with there being no jobs.

Or art/skill/personality tests. Seriously.

16 years ago — I landed a job I was nowhere near qualified to do from lying on my resume and was fired very quickly. I learned my lesson.

I think when people lie on a resume, it’s usually little things like covering employment gaps. People can easily tell when you lack an important skill.

It’s very easy to see how someone wouldn’t let having only 3 years of experience when 5 is required stop them from finishing an application.

It’s not hard to rationalize getting an interview that way.

Most jobs on job boards are ghost jobs. Some estimates say only 2 out of every 10 jobs are actually real. There’s no way to know which are real.

I think it’s understandable that if only 2 of 10 applications are even for a position that exists, I understand fully why people just make things up.

Joke’s on them, if they googled me, they would know that I’m the “Jizz Doom mod guy”, it’s still the top search result for me, after all these years. It’s their own fault if they put my name somewhere without making sure I wasn’t the jizz doom mod guy first.

A part of this I could go off about is “posts which aren’t actually jobs”. I showed up for what was advertised as a graphics design position to find out it was 100% an MLM onboarding meeting.

Minimally, it would at least get my mom, who hasn’t worked in decades, to stop “there’s plenty of jobs, here’s a page of search ‘Animator’ results from Indeed” or “just work at Kroger until you can find something in animation” as if I hadn’t thought of that. Definitely not my true motivation here.

This has happened to me before on a creative project! I found my face on a random website, listed as a game designer for a game company I had applied to work for but never been contacted about!

In LinkedIn’s defense, every job I’ve gotten in the last 10 years I got on LinkedIn. Now that I am unemployed again (yay, industry layoffs) I’ve been using it to find out who is hiring and going directly to workday for applications.

Pretty sure I just described something illegal anyways, that definitely meets the definition of a spambot.

This is the most polite way I could say “Expecting honesty when there’s no assurance a job is even real? Fuck off. I worked for Apple, Google and went to Harvard. Don’t look into it” lol.

Using job fake job postings just to boost numbers for a quarterly earnings call can potentially make thousands of people waste their time filling out a form that nobody will see. This has tangible harm.

The end goal is to mislead investors about the health of a company. It benefits nobody. 3/3

I’m sure the quoted response comes from a place of frustration as a job recruiter, and I get it. But, if you acclimate people to dishonest job postings, expect dishonest candidates.

Ghost jobs harm recruiters as much as they do applicants and shareholders. 2/3

This is valid, but employers routinely spread “nobody wants to work” and dishonest applicant narratives while failing to recognize they created the systems that incentivize dishonest applicants by screening out qualified candidates with keyword-matching, job-gap disqualification and ghost jobs. 1/3
