โ€œPeople [in tech jobs] worry that not being seen as uncritical AI cheerleaders will be a career-limiting moveโ€ฆfor those who aren't insiders in the tech industry, it's vital that you understand that you've been presented with an extremely distorted view about what tech workers really think about AIโ€

Look, if we're getting rid of the First Amendment, apparently we're getting rid of all of it...

(the proper response from journalists here is "fuck no" and if you lose your press pass, so fucking be it, and start working on building up your sources inside the pentagon to continue your reporting)

There are times in life I am jealous I didn't think to create something, and then there are times when I realize I could never create a work of satire this perfect. This new project of his is amazing.

JOSEPH WEIZENBAUM COMPUTER POWER AND HUMAN REASON FROM JUDGMENT TO CALCULATION

I finally read computer scientist Joseph Weizenbaumโ€™s 1976 classic โ€œComputer Power and Human Reason.โ€

This book deserves a massive revival in our current age of grotesque and largely thoughtless AI creep into everything:

A comic on the bridge from Star Trek the Next Generation.
Picard: COMMANDER DATA, PLEASE IDENTIFY THAT ROMULAN VESSEL.
Data: THAT'S A GREAT IDEA CAPTAIN!
IDENTIFYING A VESSEL IS A GREAT PLACE TO START - IN ANY TACTICAL OR STRATEGIC OUTER SPACE SITUATION.
THIS VESSEL APPEARS TO BE A 23rd CENTURY KLINGON BIRD OF
PREY! ๐Ÿš€๐Ÿฆ…โœจ
Picard: ARE YOU SURE?
LIKE I SAID WE'RE... PRETTY SURE IT'S ROMULAN.
Data: ...
Data: OF COURSE! SO SORRY ABOUT THAT, YOU'RE RIGHT!
ON CLOSER EXAMINATION IT'S A ROMULAN VESSEL! CAN I RECOMMEND SOME SOONGโ„ข BRAND PRODUCTS THAT CAN HELP YOU WITH THAT?
Picard cradles his face in his hand in a gesture of frustration.
Data: DID I MENTION THE PLIGHT OF OPRESSED WHITES IN SOUTH AFRICA?

Just to state this plainly:

If you are an opponent of the regime, you will be investigated, harassed, potentially kidnapped, and imprisoned.

And if you are a previously-convicted supporter of the regime, you will be released from prison.

So Long to Techโ€™s Dream Job

Five-ish years ago, @lizthegrey.com told me tech workers needed to organize because the tech giants would automate their jobs, the market would flood with talent and they would lose bargaining power. I thought it was unlikely. Hereโ€™s a story about me being wrong. www.nytimes.com/2025/08/04/t...

OpenAI's CEO is busy hyping up his products and trying to get ahead of regulation he doesn't like and is doing so to supine tech blogs who should interrogate his bullshit much more closely

True - same root. I wonder if โ€˜justiceโ€™ implies a victim. But I suppose someone facing blame for an incident could feel like a victim.

This was a great article and perhaps the first I've seen to make the connection so clearly between just culture and psychological safety. I'm interested to know where in the literature you found the link from 'just' to 'justice'. I've always understood it in the context of 'just' vs. 'unjust'

Fascinating @benthompson vision of the future of the Internet-i.e.,
"The
Agentic Web"
Scenario: Before I go to sleep, I tell ChatGPT "Plan my 5-year-old's birthday next Saturday, budget $500. When you've made the reservation, email these 20 ppl a printable invitation to attend. Also my wife wants to go to England in mid-July. Find 5 plausible flights for the family and make several distinct itineraries. Finally, pls edit this work memo."
When I go to sleep, the Al agent negotiates slots with two bowling alleys, buys a cake, emails printable invites, plans the trip, copy-edits, etc.

I have mostly seen guys commenting on this bold future and now Iโ€™m wondering how many of them have actually planned a kids birthday party (it involves a lot of choices!) or ordered a ๐ŸŽ‚ (more choices!) or planned a family trip (shit ton of choices!) involving variable preferences of multiple ppl ๐Ÿ˜‚

Even accepting the premise that AI produces useful writing (which no one should), using AI in education is like using a forklift at the gym. The weights do not actually need to be moved from place to place. That is not the work. The work is what happens within you.

In 2025, Europe awaits the reappearance of a species rare since the George W. years: The American university student attempting to pass as Canadian, but betrayed by their ever-present water bottles, extremely loud voices, and constant search for the nearest Starbucks.

How to Protect Your Retirement Savings Now as Markets Plunge If youโ€™re within five years of retiring, either before or after, youโ€™re at your most vulnerable financially. Here are steps to weather the volatility.

Here is the top comment on this article: โ€œYou are advising responsible honest people who have worked hard, saved all their livesโ€ฆ to scale down their retirement dreams because a one person has decided to destroy the US economy. Why not write an article about how to get rid of the real problem?โ€

" On April 5th, a 54% tariff goes into effect on a wide range of goods imported from China. For those of us who create boardgames, this is not just a policy change. It's a seismic shift.
At Steve Jackson Games, we are actively assessing what this means for our products, our pricing, and our future plans. We do know that we can't absorb this kind of cost increase without raising prices. We've done our best over the past few years to shield players and retailers from the full brunt of rising freight costs and other increases, but this new tax changes the equation entirely.
Here are the numbers: A product we might have manufactured in China for $3.00 last year could now cost $4.62 before we even ship it across the ocean. Add freight, warehousing, fulfillment, and distribution margins, and that once-$25 game quickly becomes a $40 product. That's not a luxury upcharge; it's survival math.
Some people ask, "Why not manufacture in the U.S.?" I wish we could. But the infrastructure to support full-scale boardgame production โ€“ specialty dice making, die-cutting, custom plastic and wood components โ€“ doesn't meaningfully exist here yet. I've gotten quotes. I've talked to factories. Even when the willingness is there, the equipment, labor, and timelines simply aren't."

There is increasingly strong evidence that multiple people sent to El Salvador to be imprisoned at US taxpayer expense were completely innocent; not members of any gang and not even people who had committed a crime in the US or Venezuela.

This is why due process must be upheld.
