One distinguishing thing about ATProto is that everything on it is public. Don't think that everything should be public, so by that measure it cannot be the everything app. The status quo of social media is the privatization of public affairs: technofeudalism. In contrast, ATProto may be republican?

Did you receive a national security letter? Why have you never had a warrant canary up? Is it too late to host one?

Language Learning Model. "AI" is just a meaningless umbrella term that often groups together unrelated technologies, ideas, and research methods.

Why Oklahoma Has a Panhandle - JSTOR Daily The long, strange story of why Oklahoma has that panhandle.

Change in distribution and abundance of southern right whales. (A) Shows historical and contemporary wintering distributions (Figure 1 from Carroll et al., 2018), and (B) shows decline in abundance and subsequent recovery (solid line is the mean, dashed line shows upper and lower 95% CI). Modified Figure 1 from Jackson et al. (2008). Contemporary sightings are divided into regions where large aggregations are seen during winter: Argentina (ARG), Brazil (BZL), South Africa (SAF), southwest Australia (SWA), south central Australia (SCA), and New Zealand sub-Antarctic (NZSA) and regions where sightings are typically of small numbers of individuals per year. The large aggregations are IWC management units and correspond to historical whaling grounds, although another 5 whaling grounds show little sign of recovery. Summer feeding areas are poorly described and so not shown.

The global whaling industry experienced a boom c. 1840-1950 as technology allowed whalers to hunt the Southern Ocean around Antarctica.

Under standard models, we would have expected krill populations to have *exploded*.

Instead, they DROPPED exponentially.

Let's talk about the KRILL PARADOX.

You claimed "Marxists" were mad about AI automating things. I pointed out that was a strawman argument and not why people were mad.

I was pointing out the real reason why "Marxists" were mad about AI (not being about hating automaton), and was asked an angry irrelevant question. This couldn't be more of a waffles scenario unless it were literally about waffles.

As a researcher in CNNs I have concerns about its privatization. I detest charlatans like you who use dishonest framing to make your point.
Or it's possible you might be that thick-headed. In that case, I will ask slowly and clearly: WHAT PART OF WHAT I SAID DON'T YOU UNDERSTAND?

Not worth of the cost of everyone who decided just to disable/delete their accounts here, and have many move back to Big Tech platforms. At least Zuckerberg has a PR team to tell him to shut up about his ambition to become Caesar.

Struggling artists are concerned about their work being used to train an AI and aren't being asked/compensated. In a different world, if data models and their training methods were released to the public domain to better all human knowledge, they might feel differently. But it's being privatized.

β€˜Blueskyism’, Political Violence, and Open Social Networks Under Authoritarianism After Kirk's murder, calls for censorship and the crackdown on political places started to include Bluesky. Open social networks must now fight political suppression as well as platform monopolies.

Good write-up. One big piece of missing context is how "Big Tech's alignment" with USA's fascist government "has shifted the boundaries of what types of speech is allowed & promoted", and that Bluesky seems to try to appease the fascists in order to stay afloat

AFAIK, This is not what happened to Haus's post, what happened is a known bug with extremely active threads that has existed for over a month.

This was actually a bug that happens with very active posts, it's a bug that hasn't been fixed over a month because this website is a dumpster fire in motion.

We would be better off focusing our anger at the unjust banning of @spacelawshitpost.me for criticizing the CEO

Really quite bad that it *appears* that @jay.bsky.team wsnted someone banned because she found him annoying and had @support.bsky.team invent a completely Orwellian excuse based on a nonsense reading of his BSky posts

This is the kind of behavior we expect from the Twitter leadership ….

Kinda odd that the reason they denied his appeal seems to be different than the explanation for why they suspended him in the first place.

People putting their head in the sand saying "I don't understand why people are mad." Cmon. Side with management if you want but don't be wilfully ignorant.

Seattle Spent Millions on Hotel Rooms to Shelter Unhoused People. Then It Stopped Filling Them. Early last year, the city signed a $2.7 million lease extension to continue using a hotel’s rooms as shelter space. Yet despite committing to pay the rent, the city stopped sending people there.

NEW: After paying for hotel rooms to shelter homeless people, Seattle deliberately left them vacant.

By the end of 2024, taxpayers were spending $4,200 a month per empty room at a time when thousands of residents were without a roof over their heads.

The regime's desire for authoritarianism is bottomless, but their capacity is not. Not even close.

They rely on bluster and memes to make up the difference. The threat is real, but less powerful than they say.

Freedom-loving Americans outnumber them by a lot. Communities can resist. Like this one:

Tariffs, do not establish new supply chains or infrastructure needed to build local industry. Similarly, Bluesky Social has done little towards making it easy to decentralize (it's hopelessly complex), and have lost their minds at other techies pointing out Mastodon/ActivityPub is more decentralized

06.10.2025 05:34 β€” πŸ‘ 6    πŸ” 1    πŸ’¬ 0    πŸ“Œ 0

Jay, as a gullible liberal, listens to bad-faith critics of Bluesky that scapegoat the user base of the site. She fears that Trump will ban Bluesky, and has been trying to appease them, and thinks the only thing that will save Bluesky is decentralization. But she's trying the equivalent of tarriffs
