@drewdietsch.bsky.social that’s the one thing I don’t see anyone calling for: distribute BETTER HALF! I’ll pay to rent it on VOD! I’d rather pay for the little indie movie, and then I’ll pirate TOGETHER. If the similarities are that obvious, we should be able to spot them just fine by ourselves.

As producers, Franco and/or Brie may have also contributed to the script. But can their hypothetical contributions be classified as “writing”? We don’t know. We may never know.

Unless there are, like, smoking gun e-mails that say things like “we’ll star in your movie if you make it more like this BETTER HALF screenplay!”

@drewdietsch.bsky.social The lawsuit states that Phelan’s script for BETTER HALF was sent to Brie and Franco’s agents in 2020. They both passed on it.

What the plaintiff now needs to prove is that material from the BETTER HALF screenplay somehow wound up in the shooting script for TOGETHER.

The plaintiff Patrick Phelan has not dropped the suit. If the litigation continues, it could go on quietly for years.

Defendant writer/director Michael Shanks has stated that he registered the TOGETHER screenplay with the WGA in 2019, the same year he says he completed his first draft.

Every time someone says that a part of a story “didn’t progress the plot” and that’s why it didn’t need to be there, I’m reminded of how many of you suck and are boring.

This isn’t just a bad way to critique sex scenes and the concept of plot, it’s a bad way to think about art.
