UK is different, and it's a full electorate, not a partisan primary. But at some point below 50% there won't be enough white racists to win any more.

In the '08 Democratic primary HRC did better in states with >5% and <25% African American population, while Obama did better elsewhere. Racist right wing voters in US are more likely Republicans, but racial animus likely explains much of that factoid.
