It's quite interesting that different democratic systems have their own unique aspects, and if you try to change some to the international standard, it throws the whole system out of whack and endangers the democratic foundations (see voter ID in the US)

Proportional representation kinda reduces the need for open primaries through the expansion of your palette of choice.
The most fucked political system is GB where you have both FPTP and weird power broker internal party politics (even leaving Reform UK Ltd. aside)

I guess you do have local elections in the UK, but they have very low turnout

I mean the Bundesländer do very much matter in a political sense too, they have quite a lot of influence through the Bundesrat, and state level elections are regular enough that they are a fairly good indicator of confidence in the central government

Picky eaters definitely were an enormous issue when kids came over to my house. On the other hand, compared to Germany, restaurants and supermarkets were considerably better and quite a bit more affordable

I think there's a lot of great food in the UK, but growing up there and seeing the slop most people ate when I visited was kinda sobering, mostly just frozen stuff. No wonder most kids I knew there were ridiculously picky eaters

Also East Germany had really good education system, so there would definitely have been a lot of demand in the west
