I think "visited" is purely tourism oriented, like you went specifically to see certain sights or places and "stayed" is the same but lengthened to like a week or something.. maybe did something else in the country than just visit stuff

As Nemesis just said, do every possible doable thing before going for the final push of the game, and be meticulous when applying squadmates to certains tasks if you want to avoid some unpleasantness
