I used to go to the Scottish Highlands on holiday with my parents as a kid. The nearest shop was in a village called Lochinver, that basically existed because of the pier and the fishing industry. Local population was <1000. There was a bus every 2 hours. Not much, but... something.

I worked at ISU in Iowa for 6 months, coming from Britain. The lack of public transport blew me away.

One bus to Iowa City a day. Goes to Ames in the morning and back in the evening. For a town of 75,000 people. If you don't have a car or a friend willing to drive you, you're trapped.
