I’m pretty sure that this was The Byrds with the short-lived lineup of Roger McGuinn, Chris Hillman, Kevin Kelly, and Clarence White. Hillman and Kelly would leave soon after.

This IS the same Brewer & Shipley that I know and the album that contains this song is my favorite of theirs.

I do love the inventiveness of the original album but this one was probably just as well left off.

James Hendricks, not to be confused with Jimi Hendrix, wrote that song. He made two really good solo albums on his own. I have a third album he made with Ginger Greco, but it is less impressive.

Two of my favorite bands. I always thought they had a similar approach in their synthesis of folk, rock, country, and soul. And wow, that first Moby Grape album! β€œAgain” was pretty great as well.

I think β€œsociopath” is an accurate word for him.

That’s kind of egg-cessive.

I think most of the record is pretty amazing. They were breaking free from β€˜60s pop and creating something new.

I assume you bought the fine original 1967 album at the top, because the 1972 reissue at the bottom was a remixed, re-recorded attempt by Gene and Jim Dickson to make it a β€˜70s singer-songwriter record. It wasn’t. They even removed Elevator Operator! I bought it in β€˜67 in mono and then later stereo.

And I agree that the Springfield were oh so good!

Unrepeatable yes, but Moby Grape came pretty close.

I had been thinking of this song recently. Listening to it here I was just sure it was Stills playing lead guitar. I went back and checked my old vinyl album, and it says that Dave Mason plays lead guitar on this track. I wonder who influenced who.

Brooks should have included β€œchurches”. What Trump is doing clearly violates Jesus’ teaching.

Now he needs to release the ones on his own so-called β€œassassination” attempts.

Bryan Maclean looking very Mike Clarke-ish on the back cover. And Softly To Me hinted at what he would do later with Orange Skies.

I agree about The Airport Song and, of course, Gene Clark’s songwriting. I was just playing The Airport Song on guitar yesterday, and marveling at how Crosby put those smooth jazz chords together so early. It was as if he was channeling Chet Baker.

I’m reading Hays and his son’s book, The Widening of God’s Mercy, where Hays writes that he thinks he was wrong in The Moral Vision of the New Testament. Wright mentions Moral Vision but not Hays more recent work and posture.

I’ve been thinking about this list of albums again. That Joni Mitchell album was another one that I bought that year. It was too experimental for me at the time, but I need to listen with older ears.

However, I wasn’t listening to Aja in 1977. That came later through the influence of David Crosby’s praise of it and Gaucho.

I guess our age in 1977 has a lot to do with this. By then, I had been heavily into The Byrds and spin-offs for a dozen years. I like that Dennis Wilson album. But my overall favorite from that year is Terence Boylan’s solo debut. Dan Fogelberg’s Nether Lands and Steely Dan’s Aja are high as well.

Sadly, not a peep. And the lectionary reading was perfectly in sync β€” Jesus proclaiming good news to the poor, captive, blind, and oppressed. Disheartening.

I believe this is the same Nancy Priddy who was the inspiration for Stephen Stills’ jazz pop Pretty Girl Why.

I saw this tour as well at the Atlanta Sports Arena. It was like a high school gymnasium and we sat on the floor! But I knew all about the Eagles by then and enjoyed their set and hearing Bernie Leadon say β€œI was around when this was written” before they played Train Leaves Here Morning.

4/ Yes, speaking against Christian Nationalism was and is good, but there were specific racist, misogynistic, and xenophobic comments that he and his campaign made during that time that needed Christian voices to oppose. I hope that you don’t block me too for getting this off my heart.
