It’s a geologically rich area - loved these Sandstone cliffs, and this Carboniferous amphitheatre close by the House. And good on the seabirds too. It’s as Scottish round here as England gets! You and Paul should visit.

The first (ordinaire is mine). The second was, I thought, from the booking website but on inspection us by Rick Ford from North Shields - and far better than my snap.

You could for a week (or two) - and it has a better roof than Dunstanburgh Castle at the next headland. The Bathing House is rented for holidaying. The Castle is a premier foreground for full moon rising snaps.

Anyway … point taken re inner voice (and yes I had noted quite a response in the Netherlands, vulturous or not).

In fairness, the opening chapter says Moth’s condition appears to be slow-moving. And besides, his illness is his illness.

But other people’s money is theirs. For me, that’s what makes her laments about lack of legal aid, homelessness & poverty seem badly off. It’s another form of appropriation.

…The attempt to say there was no direct link between the need to make reparations to the Hemmings and the bailiffs turning up strikes me as sophistry. The common denominator is money.

As to psychology, does “guided on the truth” betray arrogance, consistent with believing ‘this will not turn up’?

I agree.

For me, the Court case is the tell, both what happened there (noting the lazy stereotypes used) and what led to it. One may get cold comfort from litigation, but there is a difference between 'simplifying the memoir' and changing the back-story, esp. where that story is integral.

A really interesting thread. Medico-legal work can also be generative of - as well as generated by - the shifting sands of diagnoses.

Well said, Julian. This will rank understandably low in the catalogue of dissembling now revealed but I always found the self-pitying, ingénue nonsense that opens the book not to be remotely genuine.
