I know they’ve decided it’s better to keep their heads down or actively bribe our despot, but there’s also a sense that right wing policies have legitimacy because they’re the “party of business and free trade“ even when their actions do the opposite.

Massive arbitrary tariffs? Kidnapping your employees? Trade restrictions? It‘s crickets from big business. But a 5 cent soda tax or a plastic bag tax, and then it’s all-out war.

I would guess the Trump administration terrorizing immigrants (Including many drivers and passengers) in Chicago is much more disruptive to Lyft’s bottom line, but business only bares its teeth to advocate against liberal policies.

Honest question: what if we actually followed a news story to its conclusion before moving onto the next shiny controversy?

Trump’s sudden interest in DC crime is not in good faith. And yet the media establishment rushes to steelman and rationalize as if the issue wasn't just flooding the zone to move on from unflattering news cycles for Trump (ie Epstein).

Law does not constrain or obligate the Trump administration and its allies. It is a cudgel to be used or dropped as is convenient. Hence even longstanding constitutional rights are weakened as "customs".

I think this reflects a malleable understanding of the law that results from arbitrary executive orders and a Supreme Court that overturns longstanding precedent willy-nilly. There isn't a stable conception of "the law" in Trump's America, just what those in power can get away with.
