2.1 Lenses, Not Boxes I wondered whether this section was necessary, but games discourse seems to repeatedly find itself adrift in questions of whether _ counts as a _. We have seen the question repeatedly: Do games count as art? Do games without goals count as games? Is The Sims a game? Are hypertexts interactive fiction? Are Twine pieces literature? In fairness to the researchers cited here, all of whom I respect immensely, many of these sources pose or imply the question rhetorically. Still, the necessity of such a framing frustrates me. "Is _ a _?" is, in my opinion, a fruitless question. The question can never be answered to anyone's satisfaction, and it often serves as either a provocation to espouse politics or as a cover to institute gatekeeping. Its agenda is usually opaque to onlookers and bewildering to those trying to advance the field from across disciplines. We should be thinking in lenses, not boxes. It is always more interesting to ask "If we think of _ through the lens of _, what do we learn?" We know it is more interesting to ask "What do we learn by considering Tom Stoppard through the lens of poststructuralism?" than to ask "Is Stoppard's work poststructuralist?" And while some works may be more or less fruitful when examined through different lenses, sometimes the most unlikely pairings of lenses and objects are the most rewarding. Certainly any of the questions above would be much better served by reframing them in this way.

Saying that visual novels and other games with high narrative/artistic/intentional content have weak gameplay is peak tourist behavior. Are museums that won't let you touch most things bad? Are games "better" when they let you out like a toddler alone with crayons? You would ragequit Zork. Poser.

Creative fields of all kinds are in crisis right now. Personal and Socioeconomic circumstances are immense. No one LIKES to undersell, but if it keeps you going now, you can charge right later.

Hollering "know your worth" is not misreading the room, it's not being in the same building entirely. +

Sometimes, and especially if you start to get eyes on your public persona online, and even more especially if you're some kind of reference in your field, you need to be VERY CAREFUL with connecting intent with delivery in your speech. Because you know who's watching?

I think one key detail this article missed is that, while hiring rates may be matching layoffs, a lot of the time it's *the same* roles being offered: revamped to do more for less pay. Therefore, layoffs are a way to cheaper and exploit a now desperate workforce.

Yeah, I worked in customer support and, if it's a 'peak' of one day, they will not care. They'll wipe their hands and say "ok, volumes are back to normal, it's fixed"
If after a week they are still receiving pressure... Then they'll begin to get nervous

Why is it that diversity funds and initiatives always demand 2-3x times more work to apply for than generalist funds?

Like, they even go all "others think it's risky to invest in underrepresented people, but we don't" and then ask you just about everything that shows they think you're risky

lessons i wish the US industry would take away from this:
- strong creative direction = judicious budget use = memorable and style-defining creative decision making
- low turnover allows studio to refine and push its formula in interesting directions
- smart asset reuse is about changing context
