Good morning. I spent a few days interviewing people who lost their record collections in the wildfires for this @stereogum.bsky.social feature. A heartbreaking piece to write, but in the end it only reaffirmed my love for collecting physical media.

Dreadful. Although I do have some nostalgia for the League Two away days. One season of it was probably enough, though 😂

God yeah, forgot what a soaking we got in the away end that day.

Also thought of Eastwood! I was super excited by that signing

I’m struggling! I remember being pretty happy with the Sammy Clingan signing, in the sense that he was a proven player at our level who was wanted by other clubs.

Exactly. We’ve seen enough loanees come in over the years and barely play or make no impact. I also like that the Grimes signing isn’t just about the remainder of this season, but next season and the one after that too.

Absolutely. Adding more than one or two in January generally feels like panic. Or at least an admission that something’s gone quite wrong. I’m glad we haven’t been tempted to do business just to placate the fanbase and be seen to be doing ‘something’

More than anything, I’m just happy and relieved that the mood around the club has so rapidly picked up. It’s become fun again for the first time in quite a few months. #pusb

Even so, I don’t believe we should be getting too carried away. I want to see — and I think Lampard deserves — a full year of squad building and player development before we can really draw conclusions. #pusb

I’ve also still seen some pretty frustrating spells of sterile, aimless football, even during the winning run. But I’m well aware we’re missing some of our most potent creative outlets and results are everything. Lampard is doing well with the hand he’s been dealt. #pusb

I do believe there is an element of luck in, for example, the way in which Jamie Allen has had game time and stepped up in the way that he has. Dovin’s form has also frequently saved what remains a pretty fragile defence. #pusb

As for Lampard, I’m going to need to see much more consistent, long-term improvement before I’m fully won over, but the recent form is commendable and especially impressive given the injuries. #pusb

You can only credit the club, including King, Austin and Lampard, for enabling it to happen, especially given the pressure and scrutiny they’ve been under (not least from me). #pusb

Also delighted that we’ve gone for quality over quantity in our dealings. Firmly believe it’s better to make no January signings than recruiting a bunch of punts. Grimes significantly elevates our overall squad and adds value in so many areas in which we were lacking. #pusb

Don’t want to get carried away, but Matt Grimes is as close to my ideal signing as we could have made in this window. Vast Championship experience, dependable, a leader, a role model, statistics stack up, midfield was somewhat short.

Totally fair! I liked elements of it but it's pretty raw. And nowhere near as slick and mature as WoD.

I discovered halfway through that this record was mixed by the drummer from Deerhoof, which makes a LOT of sense. Plenty of parallels between the two, and the drums are a huge component of this album's sound.

Yeah, that's probably the most welcome aspect of this move, even if it doesn't go through. It's an acknowledgement that we need a broad range of players to build a successful squad; it's not realistic to see players purely as assets to develop whose resale value is everything.

I agree. Ideal scenario is they play a great half-season together and this elevates Sheaf's market value, which must have dipped over the past 9 months. I guess part of the calculation on Grimes is that his upside is less important if he's the missing piece of the promotion puzzle.

Feels that way to me. Grimes averages ten games a season more than Sheaf and we really need that dependability and experience right now. Sheaf will probably excel with even better players around him and without the burden of captaincy. Could work out well for all involved.
