If there's one Long 90s doctrine that can never be abandoned its that being called racist is infinitely worse than actually being racist.

Thanks for coming to my TED Talk.
In a way, the Balrog is just the Middle Earth equivalent of a hippo with a machine gun
14.02.2026 15:16 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0There are legions and legions of people whose political ideology is "people were mean to me on social media"
14.02.2026 15:10 โ ๐ 10 ๐ 1 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Well I'm not even an American citizen, but I think you've got that calculation the wrong way round. It's not the job of the electorate to be be guilted by...someone...to vote for someone they don't want to vote for. Its the job of the candidate to convince them - Harris chose not to.
14.02.2026 14:38 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0No it isn't.

14.02.2026 12:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Wonder if Peter Jackson had taken the same approach to Lord of the Rings as all filmmakers inexplicably seem to do with Wuthering Heights?
Like, just cut to credits the minute Gollum first comes upon Sam and Frodo?
Oh no - where will I buy disgusting beer now?!
14.02.2026 11:03 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0It's British slang, means more like "like fuck they did"
Still not a nice implication, tbf
Lord of the Rings and the Spider-Man trilogy both rule, because we took some absolute freak horror directors, gave them infinite budgets and never-before-seen CGI tech, and told them to make an all-quadrant family blockbuster based on the most beloved characters of the 20th century.

14.02.2026 09:57 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0I dunno, maybe its the job of candidates to convince people to vote for them, not the other way round?

14.02.2026 09:48 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Would be nice if we had a government who was interested in doing something about the crazed nonsense being spread by Elon Musk and other far-right fantasists about the UK's capital city - but instead they've effectively decided to lean into it because they can't upset Reform, Trump or the tech bros:

There was some country that was trying this recently and I can't remember which one it was, but I think it went really well.
It only matters if you think "race" is an important and "real" thing. If you don't, why would anyone care.

Honestly can't think of anything your average Reform hardliner would dislike about Saddam other than his intermittent attacks on Israel.
13.02.2026 18:33 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Not to mention plenty of Iraqis, including those who suffered under Saddam, who now idealise his period as one where the rule of law was enforced for ordinary people - compared to what the country's been like for the last two decades.
13.02.2026 18:31 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0I saw some on the other place say effectively "how can Zahawi say London is unsafe when he grew up under Saddam Hussein" which I think kind of misses the point - there are probably quite a few people in the UK who'd quite like a Saddamist approach to law and order.
