Photo top right of a green folding chair in front of a poster projected for the show: Text below: It was maybe the the twelth draft then when I had my first house shows of Cracks. Even before the show "premiered" at Cincy Fringe, audience feedback was guiding further improvements and changes to this show. After that it was rehearsal after rehearsal. Some with my director and then a lot of rehearsals by myself. It feels incredibly weird to rehearse a solo-show by yourself in a room and I sat on the floor a lot, but the repetition of the show is the only way I can remember all of it.
Photo of my chonky tuxedo cat on top of my script Text below: Bang. Now I have a show. Come and see it - this has been one of the most rewarding projects Iβve done. Feb 2nd, 9th, and 16th at 6pm at The Annoyance. Ticket link in @claire.lochmueller βs bio! Donβt regret not getting a ticket early!
Bonus Slide: General advice I received::: Tell stories from scars, not wounds. Be objective with your work and then keep it weird. Share work early with people that you trust who will give you honest feedback. So many life experiences can be a solo-show; what does this life experience say about the human condition? Reading memoirs and seeing shows in this genre was a huge help too. Two of my absolute favorite memoirs are lit by Mary Karr and The Third Person by Emma Grove Two photos, the cover of The Third Person by Emma Grove and the cover of lit by Mary Karr
24.01.2025 05:15 β π 2 π 1 π¬ 1 π 03. Edit and shape The free associated word dump of ideas needed to be drafted into a script both for my brain to play with the parts of this show and for the people who were going to read it. I called this draft zero and was then introduced to my next favorite tool in making this, a bunch of note cards.
3. Edit and shape Flash cards lying on the ground with Spoiler edited over them. Text below: Every different scene or moment in the show was given a card with a one word description of the section. Then it was a continuous process of going through the script, shuffling the parts, revising and dividing.
3. Edit and shape Photos of even more flash cards on a brown carpet. Spoiler still edited over them. First block of text: After more editing, further dividing parts, making lots of cards, shuffling, and revising this was the structure that led to the final draft. The photo below is my absolute favorite behind the scenes photo. The four cards at the top are the four scenes in the show I consider the pillars holding up the rest of it. Second block of text The revising and editing took the word count down from about 14000 to the 8000 words the script is right now. A lot of things were cut, and the process of defining this structure we found the parts of the drafts that didnβt fit the theme/tone that was developing.

*4 steps that I jumped back and forth on repeatedly and did out of order sometimes until I had a show: 1. Pick a lane 2. Fill the bucket 3. Edit and shape 4. Up on its feet
1. Pick a lane What on earth do I write about? I called this part picking a lane. I had maybe four ideas I felt like had potential for a show and I started writing about each one in a notebook, just an absolute free association word dump of anything in that "lane.β Two of the four ideas I didn't get more than a page or two, one is my next project and the section that eventually became Cracks was the one that I kept coming back to over and over again.
2. Fill the bucket The lane for Cracks was "The ways you're trans before you know it.β Once I picked this, the next phase was to fill the bucket. This is really what the notebook sections were testing the water on - and then it was just free writing more and more of any story, memory, feelings that were brought up, ideas for a scene, or a word. Writing faster than I could judge without the goal of where it would go was the only way for me to get the amount of material I needed. This material was ROUGH. Rough was good. The goal was the amount. Eventually some of my favorite scenes in the show were a circled idea in the middle of five others that didn't make it into the final draft.
Hi blue sky, I'm going to attempt to be a bit more active here. I'm Claire! I am a Chicago based comedian, actor and writer! I'm a huge nerd about all of them and wanted to share a bit of a behind the scenes about my writing process for my upcoming dark comedy memoir solo show

itβs about to get very, very hard to be transgender in the united states. likely harder than itβs been in american history. do not let them scare you into backing down. do not give into transphobes framing. stand up to them however you can. it shouldnβt be this way but we have to fight
