I don't know how many mixes I've wrecked because someone wanted the vocal "louder" and I turned it up. They meant they wanted to hear the words and that's different.

Troublingly I always have to read the liner to hear anyone else's words. And I LIKE that. I mean, fucking My Bloody Valentine!

Always chasing that slightly distanced but clear punchy mix.

Everything up front can sound great if you are The Band or Norah Jones but with textured synthetic sound I like to see it all a little out of focus on grainy film stock.

Some people nail it every time. Kudos. It's difficult for me.

The language and technique of dance music is so specific. I still live in the boom smack world before 1988 or so. I need to learn more but at the same time, I like things the way I do them already. I know it's not super competitive with newer darkwave.

Back when I did play with people we were using physical gear and couldn't afford limitless toys. So we sounded like our gear, and that's not bad. It worked for BB King (Lucille), Willie (Trigger), the Sisters (Doktor Avalanche).

I'm pretty much a solo artist, but before a new whole album I like to make a template that is my "band". This is Zoe, she plays this particular synth, this is Chloe, she plays this particular drum machine, I'll use this guitar, etc. Establish a small pool of gear and motivations for consistency.

I'm sorry to tell you that your NYT and WaPo subscriptions *might* get you similar stink eye from trans folks as when you show them your new Harry Potter underoos.

I like copybooks like the Getty-Dubay and Michael Sull ones, you just work the exercises and by the end mostly have it down.
What you are doing sounds great too.

The ones you re-inked a LOT are your absolute darlings. You can decide why later.

Limitation: this is only for pens you use. You might love a pen for a reason other than its utility. That's fine too. They can go straight to their place of honor.

Also, you might end up with 200 pens inked. :shrug:

When a pen runs out of ink, you have a choice. Re-ink, because you really were digging it. Or, don't re-ink (and keep track). After a while (could be years, depends on how many you have!) your favorite pens will be inked, and the ones you can donate or sell or throw out are in a case somewhere.

If you have a lot of fountain pens, picking your favorites can be hard. So many factors to consider. Try this:

1. Start with no pens inked.
2. You may ink any number of pens any number of times.
3. Except, if you remove a pen, you may not re-ink it later.
4. Now, write every day with your pens.
