I’m asking everyone to vote for a new Mayor by Tuesday and rank all 3 of Omar Fateh, Dewayne Davis, and Jazz Hampton in whichever order you prefer. I’ve worked at City Hall for the last 4 years and from my personal experiences I believe the City desperately needs a new mayor.

Long thread 🧡

Election mailers for the Minneapolis citywide elections.

Election mailers for the Minneapolis citywide elections.

I might be missing 1 or two mailers, but I can confidently say this is the most election mail I’ve received in a citywide election year(or possibly ever??). Certainly the most mail I’ve received from Rainville, who is likely to be re-elected-elected & I will never be convinced to vote for him!!

I'm exhausted. This is our third very intense city election in four years. A week from today we will make decisions that we can't undo until 2029. So remember to only vote for good candidates, never the bad ones.

20% of the people on SNAP are 60 and older. 40% are children under the age of 18. 40% are adults ages 18-59. Additionally, 10% of those on SNAP have a disability, which means they cannot work. AND the majority of those who can work are working.

3. Have rich friends flood the zone with PACs to buy him a city council that will immediately go to sleep after being sworn in.

I hope @dewayneforminneapolis.com doesn't mind me retelling a story he told me when we first met last winter. I kept it to myself because he wasn’t telling it publicly but he mentioned it yesterday. It’s one of the things that’s leading me to rank him first. A hope-its-ok-and-I-get-right 🧡:

I keep a diary.
It’s called The Long War. Letters to the Living.

Today I wrote:

The muscovites launched 465 drones and 32 missiles.
Many were shot down –
405 drones and 15 missiles.
The rest landed on our lives.

I made it about 12 minutes in and had to stop because I felt like I was actively losing brain cells. John did a great job as interviewer as always, but my god what a terrible candidate???

After 8 years of failed promises on everything from police reform to homelessness Minneapolis cannot afford a third term of Jacob Frey.

Luckily, we don’t have to!

City needs a new approach, new mayor

When Jacob Frey ran for Minneapolis mayor in 2017, a major claim of his campaign was that he would end homelessness in Minneapolis within five years. While he cannot be blamed for the effects of the COVID pandemic, it is fair to say he has failed miserably at this goal ("City begins clearing Minneapolis landlord's homeless encampment hours after another mass shooting," StarTribune.com, Sept. 16).
The response to this week's mass shooting at an encampment highlights the lack of empathy, imagination and leadership that mark Frey's tenure. His administration seems to only know how to pull two levers: eviction and fencing. It is reasonable to expect another four years to look like the last eight.

The police will continue to play Whac-A-Mole chasing encampments around the city, destroying the possessions, legal documents and medications of our most vulnerable residents.

Meanwhile more and more open public and private spaces will be fenced off or filled with concrete rubble, a concession of helplessness that makes our city uglier and less accessible.

Frey has failed, and it is time for an aggressive, housing-first approach that treats the unhoused as clients and a symptom of bigger problems, rather than as the problem themselves.

Photo text from recovery bikes Instagram caption:
Quincy St NE is the unique brick lined avenue that hosts Indeed, Centro, MN Nice Cream, Earl Giles, and a slew of artist studios, apartments, and other businesses.
Literal neglect has made Quincy lousy for driving. The slowed traffic and lack of sidewalks has actually activated the street making it safe for walkers, artists, and revelers and has helped foster the thriving, walkable artist and commercial district that becomes the heart of Art-a-Whirl every year.
And the city plans to strip it all clean.
Quincy is badly in need of updates, especially when it comes to accessibility and the sewer systems beneath the street. But the Mpls' planning standard calls for a cheap sheet of asphalt so that cars can move at 30-40 mph and clean new sidewalks to keep pedestrians out of the street.
Quincy's 100 year old bricks will be harvested for use in the North Loop. This rare walkable commercial district will lose much of its charm and the draw that supports some of Northeast's signature businesses and one of the biggest art events in the country.
Quincy's bricks should stay in Northeast. Pedestrians should keep their access to the street. Traffic should be slow and safe.
Quincy's quirks should be preserved to protect the thriving commercial and artist community that lives there.
There is nothing else like Quincy in the whole of Minneapolis. And once it's gone, there's no getting it back. Come to Wednesday's community meeting and tell our city planners not to strip Quincy.
Save the Quirk. Save Quincy.

Supposedly the city wanted to take the bricks from Quincy street and move them to the North Loop?

Save the Bricks Save the bricks, save Northeast Minneapolis. But kill the curbs.

There are some very rough brick streets in NE around Indeed & the Northrup King Building. The streets are being redesigned and there was quite a bit of community efforts last fall to keep the bricks because they keep drivers from driving too fast through the area!

An image from the aftermath of the shooting at Annunciation Church in Minneapolis.

In the foreground is a woman running in the middle is a street. She is running away from the camera, towards a school in the background. She has her wallet in her hands, and also her shoes, which she presumably took off so she could run faster. You can see the bottom of one of her feet, and dirt is visible (again, presumably from running barefoot).

Of all the photos posted by the Strib related to the shooting at Annunciation Church, this was the one that got me the most. Maybe because we cant see the (presumably) mom’s face, so it seems more universal? arc.stimg.co/startribunem...?
