Itโ€™s telling people that they need to change because they are currently unlovable, and expecting them to somehow love themselves more in response to that feedback.

When my friend found out how long it is and that it has two main parts (Millennium Approaches + Perestroika), she asked if it was a โ€œWicked situationโ€

My greatest accomplishment this year is convincing my friends to watch Angels in America (the HBO adaptation)

Iโ€™ve seen college writing instructors say that they only provide detailed feedback upon request (and itโ€™s rarely requested), because most students donโ€™t read detailed feedback if you give it, they just look at the grade.

similarly, if you check out a niche book from the library, you should get matched with everyone else who also checked it out. @ whoever checked out the French translation of Angels in America, we should be friends and/or possibly get married

this post brought to you by me getting outbid on the Tony Kushner postcard in The Common auction :(

I think whoever outbid me should have an enemies-to-lovers romance with me. at the very least we should be friends

dating app where you get matched with people who bid on the same item you did in an auction. a) they obviously share some interests with you, and b) if you end up marrying each other, you can co-own the desired items

Iโ€™m very excited for this book, and itโ€™s currently Read Now on NetGalley, so get on that!

Yes I know LOTR does it and it feels weird to me there too

Honestly Iโ€™m fine with that because the word โ€œSeptemberโ€ (for example) just makes me think of my job and dentist appointments and rent and taxes. For me, itโ€™s a little too real for second-world fantasy.

As a kid, I used to go to a small zoo that had an aviary w/ a floor to ceiling window. I discovered that if I flapped my arms like wings & hopped from side to side, a raven in the aviary would flap its wings & hop along with me, mirroring my movements through the window. Thatโ€™s my favorite bird.

In that case, seems kind of baffling that San Diego isnโ€™t in the top 10?

Iโ€™ve tagged books set in the early 2000s as โ€œhistorical fictionโ€ on Goodreads and Iโ€™m not sorry

I like how this implies, โ€œYou might *think* you want tuberculosis on your penis, I know it sounds fun, but thatโ€™s a popular misconception.โ€

I do not love standardized tests, but when people say we should eliminate the SAT because rich kids have an advantage, I always wonder which aspects of education they think rich kids do NOT have an advantage at

Three headlines, from three different news outlets, which mention Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by name while referring to her partner as โ€œher boyfriendโ€ and โ€œAlexandria Ocasio-Cortezโ€™s Fiancรฉโ€

Three headlines, from three different news outlets, which mention Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez by name while referring to her partner as โ€œher boyfriendโ€ and โ€œAlexandria Ocasio-Cortezโ€™s Fiancรฉโ€

Or when a headline mentions a famous man by name but leaves his non-famous wife unnamed. They do in fact do the same thing with famous women who have non-famous male partners.

Same thing when people see a headline referring to an unnamed โ€œgrandmotherโ€ and say โ€œThey would never say this about a man!โ€ Yes they would. Which you would know if you bothered to run a search on news articles with โ€œgrandfatherโ€ in the headline.

BlueSky post reading, in part, โ€œnever heard anyone say โ€˜male foundersโ€™ and prefer entrepreneurs or CEOs โ€˜who are womenโ€™ over โ€˜female founders.โ€™โ€

BlueSky post reading, in part, โ€œnever heard anyone say โ€˜male foundersโ€™ and prefer entrepreneurs or CEOs โ€˜who are womenโ€™ over โ€˜female founders.โ€™โ€

I see so many posts that say โ€œI never see people say this about women!โ€ but if you spend 30 seconds and run a search on the phrase โ€œmale foundersโ€ you will see that it is not rare.

We each brought out a wrapped package, and she got a funny look and said โ€œI think we mightโ€™ve gotten each other the same thing.โ€ I said I didnโ€™t think so because they werenโ€™t quite the same size. Turned out one of us bought the hardcover and one of us bought the paperback.

I think they *want* it to be true that AI is bad for the environment, bc they hate AI for other reasons and they think environmental concerns are a trump card in arguments. If you invented a type of AI that was good for the environment, theyโ€™d just be mad at you for taking away their trump card.

Iโ€™m reminded of Californiaโ€™s Prop 8 in 2008, where all the economic analysis suggested that keeping gay marriage would be good for the economy bc people spend a lot of money on weddings, but voters voted to ban gay marriage anyway. People like oppressing outgroups more than they like having money.
