A green field and blue sky on the edge of Portishead parish

Last week I went on a 'research walk', a new thing for me. I was attempting to 'beat the bounds' of the parish of Portishead, which is the central case study in my current book project about everyday life in 17th century villages. A good start; it was a dry day... 🧡

The Deansgate Temperance Hotel in Manchester opened at the end of 1895 and survived until 1940, when it was destroyed by enemy action.

It features in 'Temperance Lives: Life Assurance, Drink and Medicine in Britain, 1840–1918' (Bloomsbury, 2025) as part of a tour of temperance Manchester... 1/4

A Provincial Market in Second-Hand Books: Book Sales in Devon, 1688–1725 Abstract. Comparatively little is known about England’s early book-auction trade outside of London and the university towns, with few catalogues surviving

*small embarrassed voice*
A little plug for my article on Devon book sales c. 1700, which has gone online open access. tl;dr book auctions weren't just a London/Oxbridge thing: a flourishing second-hand book market centred on Exeter included auctions from the 1680s.

Final session of my 19th C unit for my brilliant mature students tonight so thought I'd dress as a Victorian heroine to entertain them. Its been such a blast to teach these brilliant students and awaken a new love of Victorian fiction in (most of) them. Finishing with Dracula so trying Mina vibes.

The origin of β€˜cake’ is actually dense bread. Egyptians added honey, but what we make today derives a lot from the 18th century Genoa β€˜sponge.’ Professor Nicola Humble writes that, given its permutations and symbolism, β€œcake is an idea.” Hard to eat one of those. Maybe… nothing is cake?
