If you invoke any one of those ideas singularly, you’re saying “I’m not the problem, those blokes are”. But that’s not how the system works.

The funny part is if I’d just said “patriarchy” or “toxic masculinity” or “rape culture” or “male violence” or “old boy networks” I’d have gotten nothing but harrumphs of approval. BUT THEY’RE ALL CONNECTED. AND THEY’RE ALL ACTUALLY KILLING PEOPLE.

Several people have QTd this and said “no, TOXIC masculinity!” as though that’s a distinction with a difference in 2025. Toxic masculinity is the default power structure right now and even those of us who try to do better still both benefit and are punished by it.

I don't do podcasts, so I don't know if this is addressed there, but: genre romance doesn't exist to "educate men" so they "get laid", any more than spy novels are manuals for actual spies. Like, listen to women, by all means, and reading what they read is one way to start, but c'mon.

Masculinity is the epidemic. Its norms and expectations are killing people of all gender identities every day. We keep individualizing (getting laid, friendships) a systemic problem and it’s killing us.

This is the second book of a duology, but it was the one the used book store had, so I read it. It may be that she put all the good stuff in the first book and this one suffers for it, I dunno. Like I said, it’s fine. Just didn’t deliver on the premise I don’t think.

You got gizmos, you got iclouds, you got barks, you got Facebook (no really), you got google chat, you got cell phones. It’s too much to go through for parents, let alone for a kid just trying to figure out if a friend is home.

Having a tween is making me start to believe in repopularizing the land line. Instead of relying on one of the half-dozen different modes of digital communication parents allow their kids to have is exhausting. It’d be so much easier if they could just pick up the phone.

It was also the first piece of fiction I read that even touches on Covid, in a way that also messed me up.
