❗️The event came at a critical moment: just a few months before the automatic renewal of the Italy–Libya deal. Signed on 2 February 2017, it renews automatically every three years unless one of the parties gives notice of withdrawal at least three months before it expires. 5/6

We also discussed our work at @de-criminalize.bsky.social and how many people, after surviving detention in Libya’s prison industry, often find themselves imprisoned again in Europe upon arrival—charged with “smuggling” for steering the boat during the journey and sentenced to long prison terms. 4/6

Together, they unpacked the crimes against humanity committed against people on the move in Libya and the Mediterranean, focusing on how EU migration policies—and the Italy–Libya Memorandum of Understanding specifically—enable and entrench these crimes. 2/6

A coalition of 60+ organizations calls for common protests in October against the Memorandum of Understanding between Italy and Libya. The deal facilitates grave abuses of people who are trying to reach Europe via Libya and the Mediterranean Sea, and thus contributes to crimes against humanity.
