What is any socioeconomic justification for the investment in “AI” that isn’t sadistic or misguided?

What, if anything, is referred to as “AI” that is not an LLM?

I hate this ride, get me off of it. The best of tech needs human labor to work, and LLMs could have a place, but they aren’t “AI” and they’re not capable of everything.

“AI” promises the investor class a post-labor world that is not available via the technology it refers to. Even if it did work that way, it would liberate no one except for the already liberated investors at the top of capitalism’s totem pole already.

I’m yet to hear any compelling case for AI other than putting people out of jobs, which really won’t happen at scale by to handing over all tech to inefficient LLMs (or even more efficient LLMs or their cousins in computer vision and machine learning).

“AI” has been adopted to connote so many different things, yet in any real sense it’s just a branding term for LLMs we’ve absorbed from marketing because capital needs a place to go in a su*c*dal economy. Please, Tell me ANYTHING that is “AI” beyond an LLM or LLM-derived tech.

Daily, I find myself frustrated about how poorly-defined the term “A.I.” is and the way it degrades our culture & society. Anyone who is “hopeful in the promise of AI” is misguided or not a critical thinker IMO. Give me a counter argument, please!

People in tech (e.g Andrew Ng) talk about “A.I.” in such a braindead way.

“We will fall behind if we don’t get average folks more eager to adopt”, “China sees advantages, why don’t we?” ask WHY? What benefits does the tech provide to everyday Americans? How is our society structured? Who benefits?

It’s a lot easier to be against things in politics than to be for things. And I respect when people are for things that use political power to make society better.
