Making a sacrifice is supposed to cost us something. We find meaning where there’s a cost to be paid. When it’s free, and easy, and we have to give up nothing at all that matters to us, we aren’t sacrificing anything.

I’m investing in my own care. I’m trying to heal my own broken heart. It’s vulnerable, raw, emotional work. I’m learning to receive care from myself, and in the process, opening my heart and soul to receive more nurture and mothering from others.

When I changed the calendar over to October 1st, I felt a visible lifting of my spirit. My new counsellor told me I’m grieving over the end of one chapter (hands-on parenting my kids) and not yet fully into the next stage. She said, “You are transforming. And transformation is difficult.”

It felt so good to realise that I can always choose my response. I could be angry about not writing, or I could acknowledge that I had been in a period of creative dormancy, which meant that a new burst of creative energy could bloom in me if I allowed it to.

Contentment is hard to find in our world today. Everywhere I look, people are attempting to achieve more, to earn more, to be more, to have more. It’s exhausting. And not satisfying or inspiring. Why have we internalised this bigger, harder, faster mentality in nearly every area of our lives?

I know that looking away is not an option. Choosing not to care because it hurts is cowardly. All of that apathy turns us away from ourselves, from our souls, from our shared humanity.

It’s painful to dream, because we might fail or be exposed as imposters. Dreaming is a risk. But one worth taking, for to dream is to connect to our deepest intuition and humanity. When we cut ourselves off from dreaming, we damage our spirit in a fundamental way.

I don’t want to be weighed down by stress that isn’t mine any longer. I want to offer support and love when people around me are struggling, but I don’t want to carry their load for them because it doesn’t belong to me.

To heal is a brave act. It requires us to show up, as our authentic selves, and to keep showing up even when it hurts (maybe especially when it hurts). And healing does hurt. Until one day, you realise the pain has faded, and now you have a scar to remember what that healing process felt like.

Telling someone we rely on them and we will miss them is a tender thing to say out loud, especially when I used to be skilled at pretending to be fine all the time, even when I was actually lonely and sad and lost.

If we want depth, we have to go to the depths. We have to face up to what we may never achieve, and the people who might not want to love us, and the fears we’ve tried to pretend we don’t have. It’s all here, part of this yearning expansive space inside of us, but we need courage to sit with it.
