I respect the optimism but I don’t think the economic fragility of 30% of the S&P500, environmental impact of new DCs running on LNG generators and potentially destroying midwestern aquifers, and hastily generated slop being pushed to production doesn’t inspire optimism personally.

I’ve already encountered developers who graduated from really good CS programs who can’t answer basic questions. One at least fessed up to using LLMs for the coding part of the interview process despite being asked not to. Our interview process is deliberately _easy_ because we all hate leetcode 🤷‍♂️

Sure, that can be applied to almost every area of study (maybe not pure mathematics). I just wonder if it’s worth lowering standards and reducing the value of developers (even those with lower skill levels) in exchange for velocity? I find very little interest in self-justifying layoffs.

Maybe I am in a bubble, but at some level can answer yes to these questions because it’s both my passion and my job to know them. I work in an industry where bugs have great scale and impact and understanding how things work is the bare minimum, not the exception.

I have had to deal with recent wave of high level design docs lately where the “necessary” APIs were clearly generated with AI and if people weren’t reviewing them closely they would end up having to build a bunch of bloated and unnecessary bullshit.

I think it’s cool that you get a bunch of people to show up, even people outside your direct circle and a part of that is because of stump party posting. I mean hell, I wish I could come up but it’s a bit of a hike from Chicago.
