23.10.2025 14:34 โ ๐ 5 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0$215 Canadian is a truly unhinged amount of money to spend on a single item, I definitely didn't want to spend this much money when I started the process, and now will never buy anything from the US again.

23.10.2025 14:30 โ ๐ 2 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 1 ๐ 0Dear small creators in the US: I will be purchasing nothing from you effective immediately until the absolutely unreasonable surprise custom fees cease.
A fee that is 60% of the cost of the item added on top of frankly unmanageable. Sunk cost fallacy obviously applies but now I just feel awful.
Just wanted you to know I got hit with a $67 tariff on my ghostie, a rather steep upcharge. You should maybe leave a note for Canadian customers, or ship things as gifts :(

Also... got paid for some mushroom ID work earlier this month and immediately turned around and ordered Fungi of Temperate Europe. Excited for my 1700 pages of beautiful mushrooms to arrive ๐
The American govt shutdown is hindering my ability to access 2 of my favourite databases (genbank and the USDA fungal collection db) and I'm grumpy about it. Sucks that this kind of (internationally relevant) infrastructure is dependent on us govt funding

Crappy photo of 3 tiny salamanders on a wet front stoop. One is on the mat, one is off near the end of the stoop, and the third is coming up from the crack between two boards
Can you spot all 3 salamanders in my 2nd pic?
Just went to grab something from my car in the rain/dark and there were 4 wee salamanders hanging out on the front stoop!!!!! ๐ฅน๐ฅฐ Maybe they live underneath the boards with the chipmunks ??
I take no pleasure in this but going to a different city with your dumb buddies and getting badly injured because you antagonized a bunch of strangers and fell down twice chasing the 110lb teenager who stole your sunglasses actually is North Jersey Excellence, of a sort.

Chalciporus piperatus is not a hardwood associated bolete, it is thought to be mycoparasitic on an Amanita and is found with mixed conifers and birch (I found it in a swampy mixed woods anyways)
I had to spend most of my time indoors but I did find a few old friends in the woods
Chalciporus piperatus, a smallish bolete found under hardwoods that has bright yellow basal mycelium
Pachyella clypeata (Copper Penny, a good common name!)
Today I collected an entire mushroom basket full of golf balls and a solid 20% had been gnawed in some capacity

19.10.2025 04:25 โ ๐ 0 ๐ 0 ๐ฌ 0 ๐ 0Here's a lovely photo of a plethora of hand-sewn fabric art creatures. There's a watermelon creature with a red face, eight black seed-like eyes, and a wide mouth with five sharp teeth. There's a white ghost trinket bag covered with purple embroidered flowers. She has a gray face, sparkly black eyes and a little frown. There's a strawberry creature with three bulbous green eyes. There's a watermelon ghost, a strawberry ghost bag, and a black creature with sharp teeth. There's a white egg with yellow embroidered flowers and purple eyeshadow and purple lips. All the creatures are sitting on green fur and there's a galaxy print fabric in the background. The watermelon creature and the watermelon ghost are sitting on metal doll chairs.
Here's a lovely photo of the cosmic ghost bag. She's a black ghost with various stars and planets embroidered on her body. There are little white stars, larger white stars, yellow stars, purple stars, a dark purple planet, a light purple planet, a red planet with a yellow ring. She has a gray moon-like face with large sparkly black eyes and a little frown. She's wearing a black fabric witch hat. She's resting on my palm and there's green fur in the background of the pic.
Here's a lovely photo of three fabric art eggs watching the tiny witch homunculus balancing on one foot on a small broom. The eggs are purple, pink and white, and they're covered with embroidered flowers. The eggs have mouths with lip colors that match their flowers. They have two flat teeth poking out of their mouths. The pink egg is wearing a small sun hat. The tiny witch homunculus is green with large sparkly red eyes and a little frown. There's green fur in the background of the photo.
Here's a photo of fabric art creatures with a white fabric background. There's a cute and creepy mothman with a black body and a gray face with twinkly red eyes and sharp teeth. There's a green Kentucky goblin with a lighter green face and large pointy ears. He has twinkly yellow eyes and he's wearing a black party hat covered with red googly eyes and a big red poof at the top. There's also a red death worm with nine cream-colored eyes and sharp teeth. The tiny homunculus witch is sitting on the worm's head. She's very small, with large twinkly red eyes and a green body. She's wearing a small version of the party hat the goblin's wearing.
Hi Bluesky! I just launched my Big Cartel fabric art shop, and I was wondering if you could help spread the word?
All of my creations are designed, hand-sewn, and hand-embroidered by me. Any sales are colossally appreciated.

A view of Lee's wet and muddy rubber boots where they stand on bright green sphagnum moss. Their pants and boot string are utterly caked in little beggartick seeds
An enormous red belted polypore (Fomitopsis mounceae, named for Canadian mycological Irene Mounce) on a dead tree, sunny forest around it
A pinky red Lactarius subg Russularia pops out of moss (liverwort?) on a sunny boggy forest floor
A North American king Bolete (Boletus chippawaensis) sits on a rotting log. Lee did not place it there....a squirrel did!!! I love squirrels.
Forgot to mention I am happily identifying mushrooms all weekend with a bunch of cool and interesting people! ๐๐ธ
If anybody requires beggartick seeds, I have about a thousand attached to my pants
To the squirrel whose king bolete I stole: sorry, I'll return it tomorrow!!
A small doe stands alert in the middle of an empty parking lot at dawn, two smaller deer on either side of her, furiously sucking off her teats
Breastfeeding in the middle of the library parking lot!!! Does she have no shame???
(I am double kidding here, breastfeeding is very fine and normal)
Screenshot of Google results for "Canada geese hybrids" showing 4 images: a greylag Goose x Canada Goose, a snow Goose x Canada Goose, and two other variations I couldn't begin to describe. The snow Goose is the funniest, it looks like someone crammed a snow Goose head on a Canada Goose body.
Jeremy I am losing my MIND over here, absolutely delighted to learn that Canada geese hybridize. What a beautiful piece of knowledge. What a weird bunch of birds!!!!

I am seeing a lot of people reposting Lakota Man today bc it's Indigenous Peoples Day. A reminder that he is not well liked amongst many (most?) Natives on social media. Many of us blocked him a long time ago. Some of the reasons why are in this article.

I really enjoyed the few times I got to play it! The movie aesthetic was perfectly suited to a pinball adaptation.
..then again, LOTR wasn't something I would have expected would make a wicked pinball and yet it did
it's because the pinball machine turned out so good looking
