TIL about a memorial ceremony in Iceland in 2019 to mark the end of a glacier, changing the place name from OkjΓΆkull to Ok (jΓΆkull = glacier). Uncompromising wording on the bronze plaque:
"This is to acknowledge that we know what is happening and what needs to be done. Only you know if we did it".

Astronomers find vast spinning filament of galaxies 140 million light-years away An international team led by the University of Oxford has identified one of the largest rotating structures ever reported: a "razor-thin" string of galaxies embedded in a giant spinning cosmic filamen...

"Cosmic filaments are the largest known structures in the universe: vast, thread-like formations of galaxies and dark matter that form a cosmic scaffolding. They also act as "highways" along which matter and momentum flow into galaxies."

ATAVISM, by Teleost 5 track album

off to see Teleost tonight, among others. Based in Glasgow but formerly of this parish, glad to see them back here. Slow, doomy stuff but with an underlying wistfulness/fragility that allows connection!

Recommended to @odubhda.bsky.social .. among others

For the first time in over 10,000 years, a long-silent volcano in Ethiopia has erupted. πŸŒ‹πŸ‡ͺπŸ‡Ή
Nothing like this has ever been documented in modern history. 🀯
The blast was so powerful that its ash traveled across continents, reaching countries far beyond Africa.
The eruption sent clouds soaring more than 10 miles into the sky β€” well above the height at which commercial airplanes fly. ⬆️
The phenomenon was so dramatic that satellites were able to capture it clearly from space. πŸ›°οΈπŸ“Έ

To me, the whole idea of managing scope is antiquated and not particularly useful. It assumes a fixed up-front plan from which you can deviate. It assumes a schedule based on that up-front plan. However, scope defined upfront does not work, and it never has.

Why most historians no longer use the biased misnomer β€œdark ages” This is not YET another article on why calling the early middle ages the dark ages is iffy, it’s a list of sources & references. These days most historians no longer use the term β€œD…

In stead of sending a link to old threads every time someone uses the term "Dark Ages", I decided to put it all in an article.

Why most historians no longer use the biased misnomer β€œdark ages”.
