A guy who lives near me has a giant Trump banner saying PEACE THROUGH STRENGTH and I'm 100% certain he's cheering this morning for the PEACE he genuinely thinks is occurring.

I keep working towards change but hearing liberals desperate to get back to their comfortable status quo does not convince me that people actually *want* change.

It's 100% making them money. The private prison industry has always been making bigots money. Then there's the merch they sell to their fellow bigots, and the tariff money they're skimming, and the weapons market, and the 'rebuilding' after the weapons, and the market manipulation- it's all grift.

I've been fortunate enough to have a good career, but I've never worked harder in my life than the years I was on public assistance when my son was little. It took levels of determination, exhaustion, and luck to get out of that situation that people giving the dirty looks could never comprehend.

They don't act independently. That would be a military coup, which is unconstitutional. What they can do, and hopefully will do if they're deployed against Americans, is refuse unlawful orders. Without military support Trump can't hold power beyond his term.

But we *do* understand them. It's literally just programming code with access to obscene amounts of data and massive processing needs, sucking our resources dry. It's not any more sentient than a video game character.

That's an odd thing to say. I did read back through the conversation and the basic premise from OP was that it was weird when people *do* argue that. You're the one who was on about whether evil could exist without religion. Why would it be off topic to address that question?

I've never argued for putting an end to religion. I'm not sure if evil is always 'wrought by the hand of man' because I'm not silly enough to think I know everything about existence. I don't find any value in religion myself but I do recognize that it's not the cause of evil so much as the excuse.

religion is consistent when it comes to what's evil. It's all a matter of individual perspective, whether you attribute it to your religious beliefs or not. Personally, when I finally read the Bible, I was very confused because God seemed like the evil one according to my own values 🤷

There's no way I'd consider jail or prison 'housing' or 'food'. The conditions are absolutely inhumane, especially now that already overcrowded institutions are also cramming in ICE victims.

I think that once you decide some people are worth sacrificing for the good of others, you embrace policies that don't ultimately benefit anyone. You don't have to believe me, but I really don't agree with the whole premise of your argument.

I can't say never, I can only speak to the scenarios I've faced or imagined. I do try to live by the belief that none of us are free unless all of us are free.

I've never really understood why it would be ok to deliberately harm one person to benefit others. If you've decided that one person is just not important in that larger context, what's to say any of the others are worth saving? And why would it be the choice, except in cases of self defense?
