in the barbie movie (2023), a peaceful matriarchy is threatened after another culture introduces the dual innovations of patriarchy and domestic horses. this is a reference to marija gimbutas's theory of the indo-european conquest of old europe.

29.07.2025 10:25 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0the danish one isn't quite right: "tooghalvfems" (92) is shortened from "tooghalvfemsindstyve" which breaks down as "to-og-halv-fem-sinds-tyve", literally "two and half fifth times twenty", where "half fifth" means 4.5 because that's the 5th half number (0.5, 1.5, 2.5, 3.5, 4.5)
24.07.2025 21:55 β π 4 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0exactly. it must be a very old rhyme given that we already see references to it in the early 17th c.
24.07.2025 21:32 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0also, german has not strongly influenced english. rather both share a relatively recent common linguistic ancestor (~6th c.) and therefore have many words and linguistic features in common.
24.07.2025 21:28 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0originally english *did* use the same system as german, but it was slowly displaced by the modern system and had mostly died out by the 18th c.
the modern english system is thought to come from the *old* french system. the modern french system developed only after the norman conquest.
... but it's also plausible that slavery was so ingrained that even most slaves couldn't imagine a world without it. either way, the important thing is not whether ppl were okay with it, but that slaves didn't want to be slaves!
23.07.2025 01:17 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 0 π 0we have no record of any roman (even a slave) ever advocating for the abolition of slavery. even during slave revolts, what's recorded is that individual slaves just didn't want to be slaves; none actually called for abolition. of course, this could be an artifact of who was writing stuff down...
23.07.2025 01:16 β π 1 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0and even if literally 100% of the adults in a society were okay with it (dubious) there's no way children were okay with the abuse they were subjected to. that should be enough!
23.07.2025 00:53 β π 2 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0there are also plenty of early french borrowings that have initial stress in *all* english dialects despite evidence that they originally had final stress in middle english, ex. "virtue".
the borrowings with differential stress seem to be more recent borrowings than these words though.
my guess would be that the forms with final stress are original (matching french final stress) and then some dialects shifted it to match the pattern of initial stress that's much more common in english bisyllabic nouns.
22.07.2025 14:17 β π 0 π 0 π¬ 1 π 0mostly but not exclusively french borrowings - latin borrowings that do this include "vaccine" and "basalt".
interestingly there are a few words that do the opposite, with initial stress in AmE and final stress in BrE/AuE, ex. "m(o)ustache".
You can't even say eyren any more.

Summary from Tumblr User sexhaver linking to the trans man OP of a post on r/trans that got removed, and which has triggered an absolutely shitstorm on trans Reddit: in the interest of full transparency, here's a repost of the original post that started this shitshow from the original OP. to summarize: he opens by explicitly saying that he wants to discuss the "unique issues" trans men face, and that he isn't trying to have this "be some oppression olympics thing". "It's not that trans men face less oppression than trans women; it's that trans men are talked about and cared about so little that many people don't actually know the shit we go through." his next point immediately claims that trans men are raped more than trans women based on three studies. one of these studies bases its results on responses from a grand total of 87 binary trans people, and the other two studies are different analyses of the EXACT SAME SURVEYMONKEY POLL (which also happens to have 4x as many trans men respondents as trans women, hm)
his next point is just him getting angry that all the discourse on bathroom bills is centered around the trans women they explicitly target, instead of men like himself. he manages to find two (2) articles supporting his claim that trans men are primarily affected by these bills before giving up and opining that "I'm sure there are more but unfortunately any discrimination trans men face is largely not reported in the media as the news likes to pretend trans women are the only type of trans people there are." mhmm. his next point finally actually addresses an experience unique to trans men, like he claimed he was going to do at the beginning, instead of just rehashing MRA talking points about how men statistically have it worse than women, like he was doing up until this point! he mentions that testoterone is a controlled substance in the US and that he refuses to DIY it for unspecified reasons. this concludes the only section of the post where he actually does what he promised in the intro. also OP's only post on r/trans before this post was complaining about the "nobody talks about how the bathroom bills affect US" thing, it's extremely obvious what angle he was shooting here. in summary: this is bog-standard bad faith tMRA shit and the only argument against the mods removing it is that doing so drew more attention to it and made this dumbass antifeminist a martyr figure
