Watch these two films back to back. Both center on boys separated from their families, forced to deal with the end of old China. Empire follows a British boy survive in a wartime internment camp, tight & personal. Emperor follows a child emperor’s life shrink from palace to prison, wide & political.

#Excalibur (1981) compresses a thousand years of Arthur into one cursed symbol, the sword as identity and the kingdom as an ideal that rots under human imperfection. It distills Malory’s version into archetype, and a functional bridge to science fiction, sword and sorcery, and superhero comics.

#Superman #400, 1984 is really worth looking at because we had a collection of one page pinups from some 20th century comic book greats including Bill Sienkiewicz, Brian Bolland, Steve Ditko, Jack Kirby, Howard Chaykin, Walt Simonson, Jack Davis, Will Eisner, and Bernie Wrightson.

#CNN was kind enough to invite me on to talk about the record sale of #Superman #1. The whole crew was incredibly professional and I thoroughly enjoyed their questions. I, of course, made sure to credit Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster for creating the superhero genre.
